Every pet owner knows chocolate is off-limits, but emergency vets see plenty of unexpected Halloween hazards every year. Here are 8 lesser-known risks to keep on your radar:
1️⃣ Xylitol / Birch Sugar
Found in sugar-free candy, gum, baked goods, and some peanut butter. It triggers a sudden, severe insulin drop in dogs, causing life-threatening low blood sugar and liver failure within minutes.
2️⃣ Glow Sticks & Jewelry
Cats love chewing on these! The chemical inside (dibutyl phthalate) is extremely bitter and corrosive. Puncturing one causes intense mouth pain, profuse foaming, vomiting, and eye irritation.
3️⃣ Snack Boxes & Fruit Treats
Individual boxes of raisins or yogurt fruit snacks left on low tables are a huge risk. Grapes and raisins cause sudden, acute kidney failure in dogs—even in tiny amounts.
