All of these dogs have shown signs of reactivity at some point in their lives, to one extent or another.

Structured pack walks can be an amazing exercise to help your dog work through reactive behaviors.

They give dogs reps of calm, focused, interaction with each other.

They allow dogs who are struggling to model the behavior of more advanced dogs in situations that are harder for them.

They teach dogs how to regulate themselves around predictable distractions, and they can build confidence in dogs who are low-confidence around other dogs or environmental triggers!

While pack walks shouldn’t be your only training plan, they can be a valuable addition to what you are doing with your reactive dog.

•That we don’t interact with every person and dog who come by us
•How to be confident

Notice that I don’t say “sit” or “down”? While obedience has its time and place and can be a great tool to teach these skills, when I’m working with dogs (especially young dogs) these are my priorities! By focusing on this over flawless obedience, we are building well-rounded dogs who can conquer what comes their way and don’t need to be micromanaged in every situation 💪🏻 just what we like to see! (Note: your dog will come home with obedience too, but honestly that’s just a bonus!)

Should my dog be off leash?

Around here, we LOVE off leash freedom and fulfillment. However, it’s important to pick the right time and place for your dog to be off leash responsibly.

My first question is: will your dog reliably recall on the first try?
Follow up: will they recall on the first try if you run into another dog, other people, wildlife, or any other sort of distractions?

If your first answer is yes, and your second is no, your dog is on their way to off leash, but needs more proofing to be safe off leash in a public space. Consider a long line or flexi lead to keep working on this with whatever method of recall training you have chosen. And remember that while we love proper ecollar training for off leash, if the dog isn’t reliable on the ecollar yet it does NOT replace a physical leash yet!

My second question: will your dog be safe off leash?
Busy traffic areas, high concentrations of dangerous wildlife like moose, and big cliffs or drop offs are some of many safety considerations to take! It’s not worth gambling with your dogs life if they make a mistake.

My third question: is it appropriate for your dog to be off leash here?
National parks, stores, and big events may not be the place to show off your off leash skills. Just because a dog can be off leash, doesn’t always mean they should be.

Off leash freedom is something to be proud of achieving for your dog. My dogs spend way more time off of a leash than on one! But know the time and place, enjoy it when it’s going to add benefit to your dogs lives, and not have more risk then it does reward.

I hear it all the time-

My dog does _____ great at home but falls apart as soon as we’re somewhere else…

What many people don’t realize is that dogs are very contextual learners! Your dog likely isn’t trying to be “bad” in new environments, they just haven’t practiced the behavior enough to generalize it out of context yet. This is why it’s so important to practice with your dog and proof your training, so that they’re up for anything!

Ruby LOVES our cats. So, we’re being sure to teach her how to just be around them! There’s a time for interaction, and then there’s time for her to build her impulse control and just be, because doing nothing when they really want something is one of the hardest skills your dog can build.

My dogs are social and enjoy playing with other dogs- so, why no to dog parks? Because I want to keep my dogs sociability! I’ve had so many clients come to me after bad experiences at a dog park with a traumatized dog who no longer liked being social. Heck, spend any amount of time outside of one and you’ll likely witness it first hand. While it is possible to build a dog back up after a bad experience, it’s something that can be avoided by being cautious of what dogs your dog gets to play and interact with. I personally choose controlled interactions with dogs I know will be safe and appropriate to build my dogs confidence and give them good experiences. That being said, I love training outside of dog parks for big time dog distractions!

Work your dog in a way that fulfills them, and makes sense for ✨you✨

The caveat being of course that some dogs are better suited for some lifestyles then others, but the majority of the time you can easily fit your dog’s training and fulfillment into things you’re already doing!

This is why it’s important to think about what you want out of a dog before choosing one, and picking one that will fit into the lifestyle you want.

I for one love enjoying outdoor activities, dog sports, patios, and travel with my personal dogs (as well as working with them as demo dogs daily) which leads me to owning higher energy, higher drive dogs who will want to be active with me all day every day.

Trust me when I say you will enjoy your time with your dog more when you are doing things you actually like doing together! It sounds simple, but is missed more often than you’d think. Don’t get caught up in everyone else’s version of the perfect dog, and let’s help you find your own version instead!
