These photos would have been impossible when I opened U Lucky Dog in 2010.

At the time, Denver’s pit bull ban was still in effect.

One of the hardest parts of owning a dog daycare was telling families we couldn’t accept their dog—not because of behavior, temperament, or anything the dog had done—but because it looked like a pit bull.

I still remember those conversations. Families would call excited to enroll their dog, and we’d have to say no based solely on appearance.

As a dog lover and small business owner, it was heartbreaking.

Many people don’t realize how broad the law was. I even had an Old English Bulldog named Bogey who attended daycare. He wasn’t a pit bull, but because he looked enough like one, he eventually had to stop coming.

That’s what made those years so difficult. It wasn’t always about what a dog was—it was often about what someone thought a dog looked like.

Fast forward to today, and some of our most beloved daycare guests are pit bulls, pit mixes, and bullies just like the dogs in these photos.

The goofy ones.

The cuddly ones.

The ones who greet us every morning like we’re long-lost family.

The ones who make us laugh every single day.

Looking back over the last 16 years, all I can think about is how many wonderful dogs and families we would have missed.

I’m grateful for how much has changed. ❤️🐾

As you celebrate, keep these pet safety tips in mind:

❤️ Create a safe space for your pet. A familiar bedroom, bathroom, or crate with their favorite bed, toys, and water can help them feel secure.

☀️ Avoid the heat. Make sure your pup has access to shade and fresh water throughout the day. Flat-faced breeds may need extra care, as hot weather can make it harder for them to cool down.

🍔 Skip the table scraps. While guests may want to share treats, rich foods, bones, and corn cobs can cause stomach upset or serious digestive issues.

🎆 Drown out the fireworks. Turn on the TV, calming music, or a fan to help reduce noise and ease anxiety during fireworks displays.
