This feels like way more than 10 years ago. A few conference calls with lawyers and governmental organizations to get these Cubans legalized. One of the craziest parts of this was when I briefly had a roughly 75gal system at my house with about 40-50 DeJongi Basslets hanging out waiting for more permanent housing. A few people got to see that tank and some non aquarists had no idea how special that was!

We should have some big updates on some current projects and expansion soon. We’re making progress daily!

We received some really nice Scarlet Badis with this weeks order. We also got a few other things in.

We also made great progress this week on one of our custom aquarium installations currently in the design phase. This project will most likely be completed in multiple phases and includes several high end custom aquarium displays that we’re really excited to build. Projects like this are exactly why we love what we do combining aquarium system design, custom fabrication, aquascaping, and life support engineering to create truly special aquarium environments.

We’re fortunate to collaborate with some of our favorite companies in the aquarium industry on some of the most unique custom aquarium builds around. Every project is an opportunity to push our creativity, functionality, and craftsmanship to the next level. We can’t wait to update this one!

We have a few Lagenandra meeboldii “Bleeding Heart” plants available in the store as an aquarium plant. This is a rare plant related to Bucephalandra that’s pretty easy to care for and grows a lot like Cryptocoryne. In lower light and nutrients it will stay green and with moderate to high light it can turn a brownish red to bright pink. It does not require CO2 injection, but like a lot of plants it’s happier with it.

We’ll also be converting some of these as a terrarium plant. In terrariums they can also exhibit the bright pink coloration with bright indirect light and a well draining nutrient rich soil.

We received an emergency call early this morning for a leaking aquarium from another company’s client who had been told by that company that “glass aquariums only last 10–12 years before they need replacement.”

That’s simply not true.

A properly built custom glass aquarium should last decades when it’s engineered correctly, transported professionally, and installed on a properly designed aquarium stand. The tank must be perfectly level, plumbing must be installed correctly to avoid stress points, and the entire system has to be designed with long-term structural integrity in mind.

Unfortunately, we’ve seen too many aquarium systems where corners were cut to increase profit margins — inferior materials, poor stand construction, improper plumbing installation, or rushed setups. Those shortcuts can eventually lead to leaks, failures, and expensive damage.

When it comes to large custom aquariums, reef tanks, and luxury aquatic displays, experience matters. Working with true aquarium professionals can make the difference between a system that lasts 30 years and one that becomes a problem after only a few.

At Fluid Dynamics International, we specialize in custom aquarium design, professional aquarium installation, and high-end aquarium maintenance throughout Long Island and the surrounding areas. We build systems designed for long-term reliability, performance, and peace of mind.

High Fin Rams are back!

We’ve been terrible about posting updates again. We have several big projects in various stages of design to build out right now on top of some major changes coming to the company and store. There are a lot of moving parts, a lot of meetings and discussions. Some big and great changes are coming. This has been in the works for a while now, but we’re finally starting to see the snowball start rolling. We don’t have solid timeframes right now, but over the next few weeks we should have a better idea of timelines.

As some of you know, I’ve had bigger plans for the store since we opened and just didn’t have the time to really focus on that aspect of the business. If we’ve talked in the store you have some idea of the plans we initially had for what an aquarium store should be. Well, we’re looking to not only rectify that, but surpass it with something even better.

We’ll be doing this in phases. Phase one should start to coalesce in the next couple weeks. This phase doesn’t immediately affect the public facing part of the store, but phases two and three will definitely be of interest to a lot of you. I will try to be better with updates as things solidify. There’s a lot of work going into this and it’s going to take a little while before we can really show you guys what’s in store.

The store will be closed tomorrow for Mother’s Day.

I forget who we were talking to the other day about the blasto frag in our reef tank at the store I couldn’t find the filtered pic of at the time. It popped up in memories the other day. This is the pic of that Iron Man Blasto colony we were looking at.

The store will be closed Friday 5/1 for a funeral. We’ll be back to normal hours for Saturday.

On a side note, we can’t give major details yet, but we’re currently testing a new piece of testing equipment that isn’t publicly available yet and so far it’s pretty amazing. It tests A LOT of necessary parameters and it looks to be accurate with great functionality and no liquids or parts to keep track of. It also self calibrates regularly. As soon as we can talk about it or post pics we’ll have updates.
