My sheep live happy, enriched lives with room to roam, play, graze, and simply be sheep.

They are not raised for meat. They are my pets, loved and cared for as individuals. Their wool is simply a byproduct of the shearing necessary for their health and comfort.

Domestic sheep depend on human care for their well-being. Without proper nutrition, mineral balance, parasite management, shearing, and protection from predators, their health and survival can quickly be compromised.

So when someone suggests my sheep aren’t “free” because they’re under my care, I have to wonder…

Since when did freedom become synonymous with neglect?

My sheep don’t need freedom from me. They deserve the freedom to live their lives without unnecessary suffering, fear, or preventable illness.

And that’s exactly what I work so hard to give them. They may not be free from human responsibility, but they are free to be sheep. And that’s the difference. 🐑🤍

Late to share BUT! Friday marked my shearing of sheep 6, 7, 8 and 9! The first shears of our own flock post shearing school!

Posey, Daisy, Paulie & Jake all got their first hair cuts and they didn’t make it super easy 😆

Posey was probably the worst choice to start with. I thought she would be the best because she is so friendly - but she is a wild card like her mother Baaahbra, and was by far the most wiggly and escaped the most!

Daisy was the easiest, which took me by complete surprise since she was one of our shyer lambs. I was expecting her to behave more like Posey did.

Paulie… he actually did amazing. SO much easier than I initially anticipated and I think our recent friendship helped - also because he is always the itchiest (he has the most Herdwick in him, his wool is like a Brillo pad!) so he realized quickly that shearing felt good!

Jake wasn’t too bad, but his leg injury made it a bit more difficult to shear him in the traditional sense. So it was a learning curve for both of us, laying him on his sides and finishing up with him standing.

I’ve got a lot of work cut out for me come spring, as all 10 will be getting shorn - and our mamas are BIG!

Today did not go as planned… in the best way possible!

What started out as a call to our friend for stone - in prep of our sheep shed being delivered next Friday- a half hour before the lot closed, turned into us getting the pad prepped just in time. We ripped up two fence posts, including the one that house the electric fencing we no longer use - I am SO happy to have that gone!!

I then decided to call our shed guy and let him know, if he still had ours ready this weekend, we could take it, instead of Friday as we planned.

Well, somehow - everything worked out- and we got my sheep shed installed today!!

Tomorrow we will level it out, Prep the inside for the sheep to move in, and reinstall our temporary fencing. Of course I will get some stain to match the barn! Next week we will add some more gravel to the front.

We have plans to move the gate and add permanent fencing to add more space to this area.

The left side has a single Dutch door and the right side has a double Dutch door, and the front as you can see, also has a double Dutch! 🥰

Posey surprised by the hose,
Followed by my new bff Paulie
Finishing with Paulie kicking his leg like a dog 😂

Paulie better watch out… he’s quickly becoming a favorite, which is a huge upgrade from “asshole” 😂❤️
