Let’s talk about ear wax 🤮🫣🤣. Rabbits usually clean their own ears with their back feet/nails. In overweight rabbits, senior rabbits, or lop-eared rabbits this becomes a difficult task for them 😞. Very frequently, my clients that fall into one of these three categories, have an excessive amount of earwax buildup in their ear canal and pinna. 👂

This waxy, warm , narrow , moist environment is the perfect storm for a bacterial infection (what we call Otitis in the vet world ). 🦠 Otitis leads to inflammation, itchiness, head tilt, and even hearing loss. ❤️‍🩹 Treatment with an exotic vet becomes expensive and not always successful. Prevention is the best way to avoid otitis , and I can help…

As part of my regular grooming routine , I always check my clients ears. Ear cleaning is sensitive and the proper solution and tools must be used by a qualified vet tech or rabbit groomer . 🧼Qtips and cotton balls are only in the pinna to grab the debris shaken out once the medicated cleaner has loosed up the wax . NEVER use q tips past the outer ear (risk of puncturing the tympanic membrane ).
