We are having a Toy drive / raffle to benefit the Pediatric brain tumor foundation. This wonderful organization gathers and distributes toys to Children fighting cancer, including those that have to spend the holidays in the hospital. We are asking for donations of new, unwrapped toys until December 20th! We do ask to try and stay away from stuffed animals cause they can retain bacteria and be detrimental to those with already compromised immune systems.

Busy and cant make the trip to get a toy? We have the answer! We are also accepting monetary donations! To be honest, the younger kids are the easiest to get toys for but, there are older kids fighting just as hard and the monetary donations help go towards buying them gift cards and other things more age appropriate.

Now to giving back to YOU! Any toy donation or monetary donations of $5 or more enters you into our raffle! We have got together with other businesses here in Morgan Plaza to offer the opportunity to give back to those who donate to this great cause.
We here at Leapin Lizards are giving away a $100 gift certificate
SkyhighGypsies (the place for your antiques and home decor) next to us have offered up a $50 gift certificate
Mystic Falls Cardboard Company (your covington home of all things TCG related) at the back of the Plaza is giving away a $100 gift certificate
And
Southern Hollywood Nutrition (Morgan Plaza's place for delicious, nutritious drinks) has offered up a $50 gift certificate!

We are accepting donations all the way until December 20th. We will go live on Facebook December 20th and our very special guest Santa Claus himself will select a winner for each gift certificate!

Our page alone has over 3,000 followers. If half of our followers alone donated it would make such an amazing impact for these children already fighting something many of us couldn't imagine dealing with. Lets make magic happen for many in need this year!

Enjoy a video of me reiterating everything I've said in this post!

We see it a lot here unfortunately.

Simon the eastern box turtle was brought to a pet store almost three months ago by a woman declaring intent to keep him as a pet. The staff at the store convinced her to leave him there, but didn’t know that he wouldn’t be releasable if no one knew where he came from.

We searched far and wide and begged the person who found him to come forward with that information, but she never did. We have accepted that we will never find Simon’s home and he will be non-releasable. 😔

Many people want us to release Simon, but we can’t, legally or ethically. Box turtles have very small home ranges and will try to walk back home— facing traffic, predators, and disrupted reproduction— no matter how far away they’re relocated. Some survive relocation, but most don’t.

Additionally, because box turtles travel such short distances in their lives, every region’s turtles have distinct DNA and carry a distinct profile of natural diseases. When one is moved, it can spread infections that are harmless to their own population but catastrophic to another. This is especially true when a box turtle was found on one side of a natural boundary, like the Tennessee river or the Cumberland Plateau.

These concerns about disease transmission are part of the reason that most states have laws forbidding the unauthorized import or export of native wildlife. The pet store where Simon was brought is just two miles from the Georgia state line, and it’s anyone’s guess whether he came from Tennessee or Georgia or somewhere else entirely. If we were to release turtle of unknown origin into Tennessee state lines, we would be violating the law and risking our license.

We wish Simon could go home, but he will instead become a treasured education animal, and will, hopefully, be able to spread the word about why removing box turtles from the wild is so wrong. 🐢
