Been trying to figure out what to say about Dolly all day…

Then I walk into my pantry to see her front and center with a $1.99 Ollie’s sticker perched on her tatas. 🤣

Classic, Dolly. I get it - I’m trying too hard.

Then I remembered she literally told us to…
“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”

I’ve probably scrolled past that quote 100 times. Very cute. Very Pinterest. Keep moving.

Now, suddenly I think about this quote and realize how most of us spend our lives doing the opposite.

We find out who we are… then start editing.

Tone that down. Fix your hair. Hide those wrinkles. Be more professional. Don’t be so needy. Don’t rock the boat. That lil business won’t work 🤨.

By 40, you can be walking around in a personality that’s been altered more times than a bridesmaid dress.

Dolly never seemed to get any alterations.

She put on a wig tall enough to require FAA clearance, squeezed those b***s into rhinestones, opened her mouth with that Tennessee cawn-bread accent, and walked straight into rooms full of people who probably thought they were smarter than her.

Then she OWNED the whole room. 👑

Not despite all these things but because of them.

Beneath the hair and halters and one-liners was a woman quietly giving away books to children, writing songs that outlived marriages, building businesses and proving you can be soft without being stupid and outrageous without becoming a joke.

She figured out who she was and did it on purpose for 80 years.

Maybe becoming yourself isn’t something that happens as you grow up…

Maybe it’s what’s left after you finally quit letting everybody else tell you who you should be.

So be too much. Be too loud. Build the lil business. Wear the damn rhinestones.

And if you ever end up on clearance at Ollie’s, make sure they put the sticker on your tatas.
