Today was Indy’s first big girl field trip, and she took on Rural King like a champ! πŸ’œ

Indy is a super affectionate girl who absolutely loves people and other dogs, so today’s focus was about impulse control and learning that she can enjoy the world around her while still staying connected to her owner.

Bentley came along for the adventure, and we worked the two dogs together on impulse control and check ins. Every time Indy chose to focus on her handler instead of a distraction, she was building the skills that create a calm, confident, and responsive dog.

For her first outing like this, she did incredibly well. We are so proud of this sweet girl and can’t wait to watch her confidence and obedience continue to grow! πŸ’™πŸΎ

Last night in Be Brave, we brought out the giant parachute and the dogs absolutely crushed it!

At first glance, it looks like a fun elementary school gym class game, but there is so much training value behind it. We started by having dogs and owners walk through the parachute together. This gave the dogs a chance to experience something new while learning to trust their owner and follow their lead. As always, the goal wasn’t to force them through it. It was to let them work through it while their owner stayed calm, confident, and supportive.

Next, we walked over the parachute while creating waves underneath their feet. This challenged the dogs to think, problem solve, and remain confident even when the ground felt a little different than normal.

To finish, we gave the owners the hard job! The dogs remained in a stay outside the parachute while their owners stepped away. This worked on confidence, impulse control, and trusting that they could be successful even when their person wasn’t right beside them.

One of my favorite things about confidence work is watching dogs realize, β€œHey, I can do hard things.” Every new obstacle, strange surface, weird noise, or silly-looking parachute is another opportunity for them to build confidence in themselves and their owners.
