A Stable Birth
This time of year is a special season for us as it is a reminder that the greatest gift ever given to the world began in the stable. The humble beginning of Jesus began in a stable because there was no room for Him at the inn.
This was somewhat of a precursor for His life. Even today there are times we don’t make room for Him in our lives or maybe we even refuse to.
It raises the question “what do we need to give up, to make room for Him”? For David, he had to give up anxiety. Moses had to give up anger. Thomas had to give up doubt. Paul had to give up pride. For us, maybe we resonate with these biblical historical figures or maybe it is something else. Maybe it is work, hobbies, relationships, hautiness, or maybe even just submission. As for Jesus, He gave up himself to make room for us. That our sins would no longer give way to death, but to life for all those that choose Him.
It is interesting that in this we see the very message of the cross. The message of the cross is giving up something, dying to self so that we may live fully for Christ.
Not only does making room for Jesus have eternal value, but even while here on this earth it restores to us earthly blessings to include peace, joy, contentment, and rest.
In Hebrews chapter 4, God was trying to give the jews rest in their journey out of Egypt. However, they chose not to make room for Him and instead tried to make room only for their own efforts.
Hebrews 4:3 says For only we who believe can enter his rest. As for the others, God said,
“In my anger I took an oath:
‘They will never enter my place of rest,’”[fn] even though this rest has been ready since he made the world.
Rest is a gift. Peace is a gift. Joy is a gift.
Certainly, doesn’t mean we will never have heartache. In fact Hebrews says that Jesus was perfected in His suffering. Just as Christ suffered, we must also suffer but we must know we are being perfected.
Jesus’ life is one of great humility. He humbly began his earthly life in a stable, because the world made no room for Him. He died on the cross to make room for our sins, offering himself up in our place.
Because of the joy that awaited Him, He endured the cross.
In this special season, may we make room for the greatest gift to humanity. One that was wrapped in a cloth, lying in a manger, born in a stable, hung and beaten on a cross, ignoring its shame, who now sits at the right hand of the Father. Let us strip away the things that take up space, especially the sin that trips us up and let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us. Lets make room every day for Jesus, the one who initiates and perfects our faith.
