New Mexico faces a significant crisis of companion animal overpopulation, in part due to the lack of widespread spaying and neutering. A large stray population means more unneutered animals driven by instinct to roam in search of mates, which contributes to the cycle.
Prevention works! The Affordable Spay Neuter law provides $1.3 million each year to fund low-cost spay/neuter services to needy families in our state. It will expire on July 1, 2026.
