Happy One Year Adoption Anniversary, Daisy!
“Wow! It’s hard to believe that a full year has passed since Daisy (Deany was her original name, but we kept her given name as Daisy) joined our family. To be honest, it has been quite an adventure!
Daisy has finally accepted us as her trusting family, just as we have accepted her. She has been a bit challenging at times because she was so fearful of everyone. But she has learned that there are good people who love and care for her, and she has finally learned to trust us.
She barks to warn us when something is going on. She still loves to chase squirrels, but I try to check the backyard before she begins her patrol. So far, the plan is working for both Daisy and the squirrels. Everyone gets their exercise! The squirrels tease her, she barks at them, and all is good.
Daisy has naturally learned not to jump up on us, chew our shoes, or beg for food. She also knows to quiet down when told. About six months ago, she discovered her toy basket, and now toys and squeak-squeaks abound! She has the full run of the house and backyard with no problems. And yes, I have to admit that lately she has even been sleeping on the bed!
I learned that Daisy had been badly abused by her original owners. Her puppies were taken away from her much too soon, and she was confined to a metal crate where she damaged her teeth. She was probably three or four years old when she came to live with us, so we chose September 10, 2022, as her birthday.
Daisy is my shadow—my Velcro dog—and I love it!
When she was first weighed, she was emaciated at just 64 pounds. Before she could be spayed, I needed to help her put on some weight. Thanks to suggestions from Tycanne and others in our email group, we were able to get her ready for surgery. Her spay went well, and now, after a year with us, she is a healthy 76 pounds!
Looking back on this first year, I’m so happy to see how far Daisy has come. She has gone from a frightened dog who struggled to trust people to a beloved member of our family who feels safe enough to follow me everywhere, play with her toys, patrol the backyard, and even claim a spot on the bed.
