When a young person is overwhelmed, “calm down” feels like the obvious thing to say — but it’s something a dysregulated brain simply can’t do on command.

In that moment, their body is in threat mode: heart racing, breath shallow, thinking brain offline. Until their nervous system feels safe again, calm isn’t a choice — it’s a state they have to be guided back into.

This visual explains the brain–body loop behind big feelings, and why co-regulation and connection work so much better than pressure or reasoning.

If you’re navigating this at home or in the classroom, our The Child Brain Explained Toolkit gives you step-by-step support to help a child return to calm.

Who your donation will benefit...this Tueday the funds received will provide scholarships for our at-risk young in the Putnam County Area. This will allow them to participate in the Lambs "2"Lions Empowering Program for our local youth. What does that mean? Having one day a week for 6-8 weeks of hands-on learning and caring for a horse. A time to reflect what the horse shared while sharing a snack with other youth.

UPDATE: I still haven’t been able to locate my humans. The kind officers of the Monterey Police Department have taken good care of me today. I saw a lot of people shared my post, but to no avail. I have to go to the Cookeville Putnam County Animal Shelter located at 2650 Gainesboro Grade. I am still hopeful I can find my humans. You can call about me at the Shelter at (931) 526-3647. Thank you to everyone who helped me🐾

Good afternoon Monterey. I have wandered away from my home and I want to go back very badly. I’m sure my humans miss me and want me to come home too. I was found in the area of the Burks Middle School around the Farley Ave. area. If you know my humans or where I live, I would be very grateful if you would call or come by the Police Department. The Monterey Police Officers enjoy my company, but I really want to go home. Please call the PD @ 839-2323 or come by 711 E. Commercial Ave.

A horse remembers the moments that shaped their safety—both the soft and the sharp.
When you meet a horse, you’re meeting all the people and pressures that came before you. But you’re also being offered a chance to add a new memory—one of peace, patience, and presence.
How you listen shapes what heals.
And what heals in one horse ripples into the next, until gentleness becomes the language we all remember.
