"Why does my dog need a heartworm test?"

Great question. Now get ready for the answer.

Before we prescribe heartworm prevention, we test because:

🦟 There is a little law called the VETERINARY PRACTICE ACT that states ALL veterinarians MUST follow evidence-based protocols for heartworm testing to ensure accurate diagnosis, prevent disease spread, and meet legal and professional standards. Basically, this means not testing is bad medicine and you cannot buy prevention without it.
🦟 Just one missed dose can result in a positive test
🦟 Giving heartworm prevention to a heartworm-positive dog can be dangerous in some instances

❤️ Heartworm disease is serious, the longer our dog goes without treatment, the more damage to the heart these parasites do
❤️ Heartworm disease is expensive to treat, in the long run prevention is definitely more cost effective
❤️ Heartworm disease is preventable with consistent prevention and routine testing

So, no, we are not testing "just to test." We are testing because it is the professional standard of care, because mosquitoes are freeloading, and heartworms are the roommate your dog doesn't want.
