Hold up, is that a sheep or a pig wearing a wool sweater?!

Meet the Mangalica, also known as the Hungarian Sheep Pig, and quite possibly the most fashion-forward farm animal on Earth. This pig doesn’t just have style, it has curls. Thick, bouncy, golden curls that make it look like it’s ready to headline a shampoo commercial.

But here’s where it gets wild. The Mangalica isn’t a modern designer breed, it’s been around since the nineteenth century. Born in Hungary from a mix of local pigs, wild boars, and Serbian breeds, this curly wonder evolved to handle brutal winters. While most pigs would shiver, the Mangalica struts through the snow like it’s on a winter runway in Milan.

And it’s not just about looks. This pig’s meat is legendary. Rich, marbled, melt-in-your-mouth good, the kind of stuff chefs whisper about. In Europe, Mangalica pork is considered a delicacy, often compared to Wagyu beef. Yes, you heard that right. A pig with fur that cooks up like a luxury steak. Talk about range.

But the story takes a dramatic twist. By the 1990s, the breed was almost gone. Like, fewer than 200 left. People had moved on to faster-growing pigs, and the Mangalica’s slow, old-school farming style fell out of favor. Luckily, a few passionate breeders and conservationists stepped in, realizing they were on the verge of losing something truly unique.

Thanks to their efforts, the Mangalica made a comeback and is now celebrated as a Hungarian national treasure. You can find them trotting proudly across farms again, rocking those curls like the divas they are.

So next time someone says pigs can’t be glamorous, show them this one. The Mangalica proves that survival isn’t just about strength, it’s about style.

Brrrrr it’s Cold! However this also means that Our Favorite Breakfast Sausage Makers are back open!!!! We Will be going Monday to get on their Schedule to have some whole hog sausage made. Let us know if you would like to be added to the list for some delicious breakfast sausage made from our pasture raised Mangalista pigs that have been given Non GMO Swine feed.
