Due to the recent regional reports of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1), I have decided to implement temporary precautions to protect the horses for the next two weeks at least, through Friday December 5th. Closer to that date I will reassess the situation and send out another update with any changes.
- Horses boarded at the barn are NOT to be trailered in or out during this time.
- All equestrian trails are temporarily closed to anyone who is not a boarder with a horse at The Stables.
- I cannot allow any visits to the Stables to see the horses by anyone who doesn't have a horse at the barn or isn't a tenant. I know many of you enjoy having others come with you to see and pet your horse but for the safety of the horses, some of which are immunocompromised, all non-essential access must be paused during this precautionary period.
- All riding lessons are to be cancelled and rescheduled for a later date during this period.
- I ask that all those coming out to the barn take into consideration whether they've come into contact with any horses from outside of the barn before coming out. Not all horses are symptomatic, and this virus is highly contagious.
Our farrier is taking steps to reduce the risk of exposure by changing shirts and hats between stops, disinfectant on their boots between stops, and disinfecting tools between stops.
This decision follows an alert from Commissioner Sid Miller, the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), and the Texas Animal Health Commission regarding an EHV-1 outbreak associated with the recent World Championship Barrel Racing (WPRA) Finals in Waco held on November 5-9th. Guidance from the Texas Animal Health Commission advises limiting travel and preventing the introduction of outside horses into unaffected areas, and we are taking proactive steps to safeguard our equine residents.
