🚨 ICYMI: K9 APPA RECOVERING AT HOME AFTER BEING SHOT BY ARMED SUSPECT IN WOLF LODGE — SUSPECT KILLED IN DEPUTY-INVOLVED SHOOTING

Here’s a quick recap for anyone who may have missed it:

Kootenai County deputies responded Tuesday night near Wolf Lodge Creek Road and East Alder Creek Road after reports of an armed, suspicious man who had contacted children in the area. Authorities say 45-year-old Derek Robert Martin pointed a firearm at a deputy and fled. During the search, K9 Appa tracked Martin while the Kootenai County Regional SWAT Team responded. Martin then fired several rounds, striking Appa. Several minutes later, a deputy-involved shooting occurred and Martin was pronounced deceased. The Idaho State Police is conducting the independent investigation into the shooting.

Appa was initially reported to be fighting for his life, but after undergoing two surgeries — including surgery to repair his jaw — his prognosis is now good and he has been released from veterinary care to recover at home with his handler and family. KCSO says Appa has a long road to full recovery, but officials are optimistic he will eventually return to duty. The Sheriff’s Office says Appa was eating well Friday morning and thanked the veterinary teams, the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department ambulance crew and K9 Luuki for their roles in Appa’s treatment and the response.

Anyone who has video of the suspect in the Wolf Lodge area, including home security or other camera footage, or who lives in the area and may have information related to the incident is encouraged to reach out to the Idaho State Police as they continue their independent investigation.

Update on Grand Park 2 Fire:

We met with Us Forest Service and Expo staff this morning and toured where the ICP (Incident Command Post) will be placed.

You will start to see an increased fire presence on the Expo Center South Overflow Parking Lot farthest away from the grounds.

You should expect to see increased traffic, tents, engines, trailers, and infrastructure establishing itself in the area. They will determine what they need and they will establish themselves in the area.

That activity will start as early as today and carry forward throughout next week. It may continue further depending on how the fire progresses.

I know this is an area that has become a hang out spot for youth, pet owners, a place to take photographs, and used sometimes as a pass through for vehicles.

As of this morning access is officially closed to everyone with the exception of US Forest Service, Fire Service, First Responders, Medical, City Personnel and Expo Staff who may be assisting or providing additional services.

There will be no public access on that overflow lot.

The overflow lot adjacent on the corner of Warner and Farman, which is currently open for the Junior Rodeo, OKC Dog Show, Pro Rodeo will remain reserved for those events. If you are attending those events, your parking has not changed.

We understand that during these times, as a giving community. That you may want to make donations to the fire fighters. Currently they are mobilizing and establishing themselves. New team members and leaders will be coming in the next few days.

During this very fast and fluid situation they are not able to take donations. Should a time come when they can or are able to accept any donations we will put that information out.

K9 Shot and Injured/SWAT Response/Suspect Dead

Kootenai County, Idaho — On August 4, 2026, at approximately 8:20 p.m., Kootenai County deputies responded to the area of Wolf Creek Lodge Road and East Alder Creek Road following reports of a suspicious male who was armed and had contacted children in the area.

Deputies located and contacted the suspicious male and he pointed a firearm at a Deputy. After pointing a firearm at the deputy, the suspect fled and was tracked by a Kootenai County Sheriff’s K9. The Kootenai County Regional SWAT Team was on scene as the suspect fired several rounds striking the K9. Several minutes later, a deputy-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was later pronounced deceased.

Sheriff Robert “Bob” Norris stated,
“Our hearts and prayers are with K9 Appa, his handler, and all of the deputy sheriff’s and police officers who brought this significant threat to our community to a swift and successful resolution. K9 Appa performed with exceptional courage and professionalism. His actions undoubtedly helped protect our deputies and officers from serious injury or death. On behalf of our community, I want to thank Appa for his outstanding service. Great job Appa! Let this incident serve as a clear reminder to anyone who chooses to violently confront the men and women of the of the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office or our law enforcement partners, our deputies have both the legal authority and the unwavering duty to protect themselves and the public. If an armed suspect presents an imminent threat, our deputies will not hesitate to take any necessary action to end that threat. Our mission is and always be, to protect our community and ensure that our deputies and officers return home safely to their families at the end of every shift.”

The Idaho State Police is conducting the independent investigation of the officer-involved shooting.

The suspect was identified as 45-year-old Derek Robert Martin of Bonner County.

The FDA announced a voluntary recall for 13.2-ounce cans of Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor wet dog food due to potential contamination with sharp metal and plastic fragments.

The affected cans have lot codes 613C3KKCFC and 613C1KKCFC.

What you should know:The Hazard: Ingesting sharp metal or plastic poses severe health risks to dogs, including choking, gastrointestinal blockages, and lacerations.How it Happened: Mars Petcare US sent these specific lots to a third-party vendor for destruction, but they were fraudulently diverted and illegally sold through unauthorized channels in the U.S..Current Status: No illnesses or injuries have been reported to date.
