🩺 Why do a CBC/Chem?
These routine blood tests give us a snapshot of your horse’s overall health and provide a vital baseline for future comparisons. They can help detect illness before symptoms appear, allowing for quicker treatment and better outcomes.
🔹 CBC (Complete Blood Count): Assesses white blood cells (your horse’s disease fighters), red blood cells (to check for anemia), and hydration status.
🔹 Chemistry Panel: Evaluates key organ functions (like the liver and kidneys), electrolyte levels (sodium, potassium, calcium), and important blood proteins.

🩺 Why test ACTH & Insulin?
These tests help identify Cushing’s Disease (PPID) and Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS)—two common endocrine disorders that can lead to serious complications like laminitis if left untreated.
🔹 What is Cushing’s? Cushing’s is a hormonal disorder, often in horses over 15, that can cause changes like delayed shedding or long, curly coats. However, many horses show no obvious signs until more serious issues arise. ACTH testing helps us catch it early.
🔹 What is EMS? Equine Metabolic Syndrome is often seen in “easy keepers” and is characterized by insulin resistance. Managing it early through diet, exercise, or medication can prevent painful laminitis episodes.

Breeding season always feels official at EWP when the first mare comes to stay! It’s especially amazing when she comes in with her foal at her side!! Such an amazing time of year to know we are contributing to the next generation of quality horses !!

Our offices will be closed starting noon on Wednesday, November 27 and re-opening on Monday, December 3. As always, we are available for emergency services.

The Equine Wellness and Performance of Central Florida office will be closed starting noon Wednesday, October 9 through Thursday, October 10.

As always, we will provide emergency services as long as it is safe to be on the road.

We plan to reopen Friday, October 11 for regular service, weather and road condition permitting.

Please stay safe and give extra love and hugs from us to your horses and ponies.

We are devastated to see the disastrous effects of Hurricane Helene that have impacted thousands of people and equines far and wide. Please join The Foundation for the Horse, the AAEP's charitable arm, in aiding the victims of the hurricane with a donation to help those affected.

The Foundation for the Horse works directly with equine veterinarians on the ground to make sure supplies, hay, feed and veterinary care are provided to animals in need.

Pictured is an example of the devasting effects the residents of Hendersonville, NC have suffered during Hurricane Helene.
