🚨 HOT TAKE: Punishing aggression doesn't make dogs safer. It can make them MORE dangerous. 🚨

I know, I know. The internet is full of people promising that a leash pop, shock collar, or "showing your dog who's boss" will fix aggression.

But here's the problem:

🐾 Growling is communication.
🐾 Barking is communication.
🐾 Lunging is communication.

When we punish those warning signs, we often don't change the fear, anxiety, stress, or discomfort causing them.

We just teach dogs to stop warning us.

And a dog that has been punished for growling may learn to skip the growl entirely and go straight to a bite.

Yikes.

🐾 WHY DOES THE PACT FUND EXIST? 🐾

Because loving your dog and being able to afford everything they need are not always the same thing.

Because a family shouldn't have to choose between paying the electric bill and getting help for their dog's behavior challenges.

Because a veterinary bill shouldn't mean a beloved pet loses their home.

Because access to training, behavior support, and pet care shouldn't be reserved for people with the biggest bank accounts.

Every day, we see families who love their dogs deeply but are struggling to access the resources they need. Too often, that lack of access leads to dogs being surrendered to shelters.

And here's the heartbreaking reality:

💔 Most dogs entering shelters are under 2 years old.
💔 Shelter euthanasia remains one of the leading causes of death for young dogs.
💔 Many behavior problems can be prevented or improved with early intervention and support.

That's why the PACT Fund exists.

💜 To provide training and behavior support.
💜 To help families access supplies and equipment.
💜 To connect people with resources.
💜 To keep dogs where they belong—with the people who love them.

Valarie and her very own little sidekick, Elphie, had the absolute pleasure of appearing on WKYC Channel 3’s Ready Pet Go to talk about one of our favorite topics: what to look for in an ethical breeder. 🐶💚

Bringing a puppy home is a HUGE decision, and where that puppy comes from matters. Ethical breeders prioritize the health, temperament, and well-being of their dogs, and prospective puppy families should know what questions to ask and what red flags to watch for.

We’re so excited to help educate future puppy parents and advocate for better breeding practices—because every puppy deserves the best possible start in life. ❤️

🎨🐾 HAPPY NATIONAL CRAFT FOR YOUR ANIMAL SHELTER DAY! 🐾🎨

Feeling crafty? Want to help shelter pets without spending a fortune?

Good news: You don't need to be the star of a DIY Pinterest board to make a difference.

Many shelters and rescues love receiving simple enrichment items to help keep pets mentally engaged while they wait for their forever homes.

Easy DIY ideas:

🧻 Toilet Paper Tube Treat Puzzles
Fold the ends in, toss in a few treats, and let the sniffing and shredding begin.

👕 T-Shirt Tug Toys
Got old t-shirts? Cut them into strips, braid them together, and boom—dog toy.

📦 Treat Boxes
Drop treats into a small cardboard box, add some crumpled paper, and let dogs channel their inner raccoon.

🧺 Snuffle Boxes
Fill a shallow box with paper, cardboard tubes, and treats for a fun nose-work activity.

🧦 Sock Stuffers
Clean orphan socks can be filled with other fabric scraps and tied off for supervised enrichment.

🚨 YOUR DOG SNAPPED. NOW WHAT? 🚨

Your dog growled.

Your dog barked.

Your dog lunged.

Your dog snapped.

And suddenly everyone around you becomes a self-proclaimed dog trainer.

🙄 "You need to show them who's boss."
🙄 "Give them a correction."
🙄 "They need to know you're the alpha."

Hard pass.

When dogs snap or lunge, they're communicating something important. Fear, anxiety, stress, pain, frustration, and overwhelm are often hiding behind those behaviors. Punishing the reaction doesn't fix the reason it happened.

✨ Impulse control doesn't have to be boring.

One of the games Elphie and I have been working on is "Slow Treat." Instead of snatching the treat the second it appears, she learns that patience pays off.

This simple exercise helps build:
🐾 Frustration tolerance
🐾 Self-control
🐾 Focus around food
🐾 The ability to make thoughtful choices instead of impulsive ones

The goal isn't a puppy who never gets excited. We want happy, enthusiastic dogs! The goal is teaching them that taking a breath and making a good choice is often what earns the reward.

Remember: impulse control isn't about saying "no" all the time—it's about giving your dog opportunities to practice saying "I can wait."

Elphie is still very much a puppy, so we keep sessions short, fun, and successful. Tiny wins today build confident, thoughtful dogs tomorrow. 💚
