Though Shiitake take a while to grow, it is a beautiful process. Notice the exaggerated mycelium forming in to “popcorn” and the beginning stages of browning as it matures. The fun part will be the cold shock and fruiting.

Well, test complete. New gear in. I couldn’t wait to put up the tent, so in the bags go! Still need to add lighting and humidity, but cool, fresh, filter air ✅
Going in one piece at a time 👍

Day 10, Countertop grow test. Low air and surface humidity caused too much browning on the sprouting fruit. Increased the misting schedule helped, but drying is still a concern due to residential humidity in the 50’s. Adding a plastic barrier promotes a moist microclimate, promoting better moisture levels. Balance the oxygen requirements by local air circulation. Still no signs of contamination across the crop.

Day 8. Still progressing nicely. Increasing the mist schedule has been successful to prevent further surface drying. Ideally we want to have a self contained environment, providing consistent levels of moisture, rather than out on the open counter. Yet, this shows it can be done, better even if fewer bags and a slight environmental modification. Testing different cut patterns has yielded some interesting fruiting responses. No contamination observed as of yet, which is huge win 🏆

Day 6, no more equipment than a spray bottle. Proof you can grow Lion’s Mane indoors, on your counter top. Maintaining proper humidity is a challenge, as shown from the light browning. However, after adjusting the mist cycle from 3x to 5x a day, seems to be doing the trick. Getting the humidity right and maintaining sterility are your biggest challenges, but it can be done quite simply with the right prep.
