"That trainer sure uses her roundpen a lot..." ๐ง
Oh yes I've heard it. Enough to where I'll make a post about it. ;)
Let's talk about a "Roundpen" and why I use it with the c**ts I am riding. It's not because I work them in circles around and around all day. It's not that I don't trust these c**ts/horses out in a big area, it's not that all I do is roundpen work... But want to know WHY I use my roundpen alot?
Well first, it's not your average 40-60ft roundpen. My roundpen is over 200ft around and allows me to start c**ts in a safe setting all while being able to do arena work as well.
Second, I am a FIRM believer that a horse should be started in a controlled environment until they are confident in ALL gaits, that they know whoa, that they know how to one rein stop, and just have the basics underneath them.
Third, I believe you can achieve a lot on both the ground and in the saddle in a larger roundpen. A roundpen is essential to what I do. Everyone does their own thing but yes I do ride in my "roundpen" daily before taking horses out. I can work patterns, soften them up, warm them up, and get them confident in themselves all while have the benefit of a roundpen and an arena. ๐ฏ
So when you see me "riding so much in a roundpen setting" you can go back and look on this to remind yourself that I do this because it's something I believe in. These horses get in larger arenas trust me. But I focus on getting a nice, quiet, supple, and confident horse in my roundpen and THEN taking them out you see everything come together.
So no, it is not just going around and around and around. When you know more about horsemanship and using your tools, it's actually pretty important. ๐
