We have had the honor of having 11 out of the come through here. These dogs have become a very special part of our lives but these 4 are extra special. You can train a dog to many things but you cannot train them to have a connection with someone they hardly know. The dog you adopted has no idea that you “rescued” them. They only know things are different. And things will remain different until they become normal. And then that “normal” will feel like home. Question is. How long are you going to give them? A dog doesn’t owe you an immediate connection just because you gave them a home. Now who wants to connect with Jett from the ?

Me: Nothing bad. Tell me one thing you’ve learned here.
Maverick: Learning to trust someone sure does make this world less scary.
Me: Anything else?
Maverick: That no matter how bad things can get things can turn around in an instant.
Me: Those are good things to learn. Anything else?
Maverick: I learned that I love you. Which then led me to love Jacqui, Eleanor, Dennis, and Bri. I even kind of love that one girl that came here a couple of times. I think her name was Jen?
Me: Funny you mention that. She kind of loves you too
Maverick: Really? Next thing you’re gonna say is that she wants to adopt me.
Me: Well….she kind of already did.
Maverick : Wait. So I have a mom? 😍😭
Me: You do, buddy.

Everyone meet, Chip! He’s with us to learn how to “dog” again and along the way give him some pointers on how to be an excellent pet along the way! Thank you Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue for saving this guy!!

In a time where we like to take our dogs everywhere with us, I think understanding your dog’s social meter and the type of “social” they actually enjoy can help keep them from getting overstimulated and eventually “acting out.”
Some social meters are longer than others. Some dogs can hang all day, while others might only have a little bit in the tank before they’ve had enough. Some prefer hikes over patios and vice versa. And that’s okay.
The important part is learning what your dog’s cues are when that meter is starting to get full and “calling it a day” before they feel like they have to get louder about it.
Knowing your dog is advocating for your dog.
