In a time where we like to take our dogs everywhere with us, I think understanding your dog’s social meter and the type of “social” they actually enjoy can help keep them from getting overstimulated and eventually “acting out.”
Some social meters are longer than others. Some dogs can hang all day, while others might only have a little bit in the tank before they’ve had enough. Some prefer hikes over patios and vice versa. And that’s okay.
The important part is learning what your dog’s cues are when that meter is starting to get full and “calling it a day” before they feel like they have to get louder about it.
Knowing your dog is advocating for your dog.

Definition of a reaction: A reaction is how someone responds to an event, situation, or environment.

So, a dog being neutral to a situation or environment is just as much of a reaction as lunging, barking, or pulling.

Instead of training with the mindset of teaching your dog “not to react,” reframe it as teaching your dog the reaction you would like them to have.

We’re not asking them to have no response. We’re teaching them a calmer, less stressful response.

It’s simple, not easy—but you got this.

We took Simba and Copper from the and Elsa and Fiona, the huskies, from the and had one big, awkward social. 😂

Simba and Copper are only 6 months old, but just like Elsa and Fiona, they grew up in a backyard with no real guidance. They actually remind me a lot of Fiona and Elsa when they first got here.

For these dogs, any exposure is new exposure. New dogs, new environments, new expectations…all things.

But I believe that before you can get good at something, you have to be willing to be a little awkward at it first. ❤️

They don’t need to be perfect. They just need opportunities to learn, guidance along the way, consistency with follow through and people willing to give them the time they deserve.

Thanks to The Canine Condition Jacqueline Piñol , these guys are going to be just fine—and eventually find the homes that are perfect for them!

I’m not sure who had more trouble in this video—Mika settling or me trying to talk. I should have taken Eleanor Brison offer to help me instead of trying to do this myself. 🤣

So here’s a list of things we’re helping Mika with:

* Leash manners
* Being neutral to his surroundings
* Learning to rest more
* Being calm around other dogs
* Teaching him all of those things while still keeping his sweet personality

It’s hard to say Mika is “bad” at any of these things because, honestly, it doesn’t feel like anyone has ever taken the time to consistently work with him and follow through.

With all that said, we are very happy with his progress after just 7 days! ❤️
