Saved in the Nick of Time: Jolene's Story๐ฉท
When Jolene was picked up as a stray in Georgia, no one knew her past-only that her future was uncertain. Like many dogs in Russell County, she found herself at the Russell County Animal Shelter, where time is often in short supply.
Shelter volunteers quickly noticed that, although Jolene was emaciated, she might be pregnant. When her milk came in, the reality set in. The Shelter Networking Team worked urgently to find a rescue, but Jolene's puppies didn't wait.
On August 11, 2025, Jolene gave birth to eight puppies inside the shelter. By day's end, one puppy had passed away and another was struggling. Jolene was overwhelmed and unable to nurse. Without immediate help, the remaining puppies were at serious risk.
That's when the call went out.
Operation Dog Tag, a local foster and logistics team, was contacted with an urgent plea:
Jolene needs outโnow. Within thirty minutes, an ODT foster stepped in and Jolene and her puppies were moved to safety. Sadly, the critical puppy did not survive, but veterinarians confirmed the remaining pups - though in rough shape - were expected to recover.
Once fed, rested, and in a calm environment, Jolene transformed. She began nursing her puppies, gained weight, and settled into her role as a devoted mom-just in time.
Thanks to the combined efforts of the Russell County Shelter Volunteer and Networking Team, Operation Dog Tag, Seuks Army, and Live and Let Live Rescue, Jolene's story now points toward a brighter future.
It took a village.
And what a village it was.๐พ โค๏ธ
Mama Joleneโs story is just another example of why fosters are very very important for these pregnant mamas!! She may have had all her puppies survive if she hadnโt given birth in the shelter. Stressed and scared of the unknown.
Jolene is now available for adoption. Please email [email protected] if interested.
