☀️ Summer Safety Reminder from BnT Boxers of Oregon ☀️
When your dog has been running, playing hard, or spending time in the heat, it can be tempting to let them dive headfirst into a water bowl. While hydration is extremely important, drinking large amounts of water too quickly while heavily panting can cause stomach discomfort, vomiting, and in deep-chested breeds like Boxers, may contribute to risk factors associated with bloat (GDV).
GDV is a life-threatening emergency where the stomach twists and cuts off blood flow. Every Boxer owner should be familiar with the signs and know when to seek immediate veterinary care.
At BnT Boxers of Oregon, none of our dogs have had a gastropexy procedure. We believe management and prevention are incredibly important parts of responsible ownership. We provide fresh water at all times, but after vigorous exercise, running, hiking, or hard play, we carefully monitor water intake and often offer it in smaller increments over the next hour rather than allowing frantic gulping.
🤍 Encourage small sips instead of excessive gulping
🤍 Take frequent breaks during exercise
🤍 Allow dogs to cool down gradually
🤍 Provide shade and fresh water throughout the day
🤍 Watch for excessive panting, pacing, drooling, restlessness, unsuccessful attempts to vomit, or a swollen abdomen
Every dog is different. If you have concerns about your Boxer’s individual risk factors, including whether a gastropexy may be appropriate, we encourage you to have a conversation with your veterinarian. They can help you make the best decision for your dog’s health and lifestyle.
Large and giant breed owners should be especially mindful during these hot summer days. A little prevention goes a long way. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and give those pups plenty of opportunities to rest and recover. 🤍🐾
Water is life. Too much, too fast after hard exercise can be trouble. Slow them down, cool them off, and let them sip their way back to comfort.☀️🐾💙
