Harvey has been putting in the work too!! Harvey’s owners have property where he’ll be able to get out, explore, and move which is going to be so incredibly beneficial for him!

For dogs like Harvey, movement is such an important piece of the puzzle when it comes to reactivity and anxious behaviors. That steady movement and exploration help regulate the nervous system, lower stress and adrenaline levels, and give dogs an appropriate outlet for all of that mental and physical energy.

That movement also encourages sniffing (which we have really been working on getting Harvey to practice more of so he can process the environment versus immediately reacting), exploring, and other decompression behaviors that help shift dogs out of that constant state of hypervigilance and environmental scanning. A lot of reactive or anxious dogs genuinely feel better when they are allowed to move their bodies in a productive way rather than being stuck in one place trying to process everything around them.

One thing I have to take advantage of are those moments when he’s moving head and checking something out to get reps in, because despite all of this freedom, Harvey still never travels too far away from me! 😂

Getting out into the woods to work on recall with all the different scents and smells makes for such great practice! Especially for this girl with some Beagle in her! 😜 Her nose definitely wants to put in the work out there, but she is doing absolutely fantastic!! 🤩

You’ll hear me use two different cues in these videos! “Dora, come!” is her formal recall cue, which means come all the way to me, sit, and hang out with me until released. “Let’s go!” is a much looser cue that simply means follow along and move with me. I’ve also been pairing the tone on her e-collar to mean the same thing as our “let’s go” cue! 😁

We had our second graduate training meet up last night and what a fun one it was!!! 🤩 I don’t know about anyone else, but Kino is still absolutely WHOOPED this morning!! 😂

We started things off with a few warm up drills before heading down to the trail to practice walking together and passing others. Once we made it back, we worked on polite greetings and approaching people appropriately, then wrapped the evening up with some fun rotating agility equipment stations!

Huge thank you to this awesome crew for continuing to show up, put in the work, build on the training you all worked so hard for, strengthen your relationships with your dogs, and most importantly… have a good time doing it!! 🫶🏼 We are already looking forward to the next one, which we’ll be taking out on the town!! Y’all rock!! 🤘🏼❤️

Dora girl has been absolutely rocking it learning to walk with and be around Kino! They got to mosey around the yard together after our walk today, and she did so well!! 🫶🏼

Super proud of our Harvey boy!! 🥹 Earlier this week, my dad and I were out on a walk with Harvey when one of our neighbors came running by. Harvey definitely had some big feelings about that moment and absolutely blew up. 😅

Then yesterday, as we were coming back from our walk, the Mosquito Authority crew was out prepping to spray. Harvey noticed the guy working, had a small reaction, but it was much less significant and much easier for him to work through as we moved through the yard.

And now this morning… we saw that same running neighbor again! 🤩 Harvey perked up, checked in with me for guidance, and we continued on our way with zero reaction! Even the neighbor said, “Great job!” Such a big win for our Harvey guy!! 🥰

Dora girl has also been doing stellar with her work!! We’ve been getting her out and about with Kino as well, and she has come SUCH a long way in the short time she’s been with us! 🤩

And if you couldn’t tell… my dad has apparently decided to pull from his old horse training experience with Kino instead of taking my guidance.. Constant pressure and all! 😅 Thankfully, Kino is a good sport and always a huge help in the work that we do around here! He’s such a steady dog to have along side in the training process! 🫶🏼

It’s been a busy day around here!! First up, our buddy Harvey! While I’ve been conditioning him to a few different tools, Harvey is what I would call a “Goldie locks” dog, meaning I really have to find the right fit for him. Why? Harvey has an autoimmune disease that attacks his nails and nail beds, which can make him VERY sensitive to pressure. Whether that sensitivity has become a conditioned response from ongoing pain in his feet or is tied into overall nervous system sensitivity that contributes to some of his reactivity and behavioral challenges, it’s something that absolutely has to be taken into consideration during training.

This is exactly why I never take a “one size fits all” approach. The whole picture of the dog matters. Behavior, health, genetics, learning, environment, sensitivities, it all plays a role. So far, I’ve found that the Heather’s Heroes Sidekick and the tactile sensation from the ecollar (after proper conditioning) have both been really nice communication tools for him!

It’s always so fascinating getting to know each dog that comes through here and diving deeper into what makes them tick. Understanding a dog’s overall health and how it can impact behavior is SO incredibly important when doing behavioral work, and Harvey has been such a good reminder of that!!! 🤗

Dora has also made some awesome strides with her leash work!! Before, she was literally dragging you wherever she wanted to go! 😅 But she’s made huge progress in learning not to pull. These long line walks have become so much more enjoyable! 😁

A bit behind on posting today! We’ve been getting Harvey out and about with Kino, and he’s really starting to fall into the flow of our walks. He’s showing great improvement with less reactivity toward him and less anxiousness, and more confidence as he settles into the routine! 😁🎉
