❄️ Snow is coming soon, Colorado! 🐾

Are you and your dogs ready for winter adventures? 🏔️

From snowy hikes and off-leash adventures to navigating icy sidewalks and busy ski towns, winter brings a whole new set of challenges (and opportunities!) for our dogs.

Before the snow starts piling up, now is the perfect time to brush up on those essential skills:

🐾 Reliable recall — Because coming when called is even more important when the snow starts flying.

🐾 Loose-leash walking — Nobody wants to be dragged down an icy sidewalk!

🐾 Distraction training — Wildlife, other dogs, skiers, and all the excitement of winter adventures.

🐾 Confidence and manners in new environments — Helping your dog feel comfortable wherever your winter adventures take you.

At Happy Dogs Training, we believe adventures are better when you and your dog have the skills to enjoy them together. 💙

Let’s get your dog winter-adventure ready! Book a private lesson with us before the snow arrives.

Off-leash dogs happen — even in places where they aren’t supposed to. So if you have a reactive, fearful, or dog-selective dog, having a plan before another dog comes running up can make a huge difference.

First: stay calm and assess the situation. Is your dog capable of safely interacting, or do you need to prevent the greeting entirely?

If you need to leave, get your dog’s attention, use food if needed, place yourself between the dogs, and move away promptly. Don’t wait around hoping the other owner gets control of their dog.

If you can’t avoid the interaction, communicate loudly with the other owner and try not to add unnecessary tension to the situation. Give your dog room to move and communicate rather than holding them on a tight leash and micromanaging every second.

And remember: an unfamiliar off-leash dog running toward you is frustrating and inappropriate, but most approaching dogs are not coming over to attack your dog. Respond to the situation in front of you, not the worst-case scenario in your head.

You can’t control whether someone else lets their dog off leash. You can prepare your dog with practiced exit strategies, attention cues, emergency U-turns, and the ability to move away with you.

Advocating for your dog isn’t just telling someone else to leash theirs — it’s having the skills and plan to keep your dog safe when they don’t.

Save this one for your next walk. 🐾
