Almost Home Animal Rescue Almost Home Animal Rescue is a nonprofit organization funded solely by donations in Chariton, Iowa.

We strive to serve as a safe refuge and resource for animal welfare in our community. Almost Home Animal Rescue is working to create a community of resources and solutions through committed care of animals, education of pet ownership, and providing a home for the homeless.

🎄🐾 And the Winner of the Great Ornament Countdown Is… 🐾🎄

Congratulations to Diane Taylor, who guessed 7 ornaments left — and somehow nailed it despite the absolute chaos that followed. 😅👏

What happened to the rest of the ornaments, you ask?
Well… the cats happened.

At one point there was a full, beautiful Christmas tree.
Then the cats decided it was:
✔️ a climbing gym
✔️ a batting cage
✔️ a personal vendetta

Ornaments were swatted, trees were tackled, and gravity was aggressively tested. By the end, the tree stood no chance and only 7 brave ornaments survived the feline uprising. 🐱🎄💥

The results are in, and we’re finally ready to share! 🎁
Our shelter babies’ DNA test revealed 5 different breeds — and what a fun mix they are!

✨ Puppy DNA Results:
🐾 47% Labrador Retriever
🐾 45% American Foxhound
🐾 4% Treeing Walker Coonhound
🐾 3% Plott Hound
🐾 1% Flat-Coated Retriever

That means these pups are a perfect blend of loyalty, intelligence, playfulness, and hound-dog charm — with noses made for exploring and hearts made for loving. 💛

Thank you to everyone who guessed, followed along, and cheered these babies on as they grow. Watching them hit milestones like first food, first baths, and now their DNA reveal makes this season extra special.

🎄 Maizie’s Christmas Wish 🎄

Maizie came to us on 10/29/2025 bruised, battered, and broken — after being hit by a car and left to fend for herself.

She had every reason to be afraid of the world.
But instead… Maizie chose love.

Because of what she’s been through, Maizie looks older than she really is. Her body tells a story of survival, but her heart tells a story of pure kindness. She greets everyone with warmth, leans in for affection, and reminds us every day that resilience doesn’t always look loud — sometimes it looks like quiet cuddles and gentle trust.

Maizie may never be a track star.
But if there were a cuddling championship, she’d take home the gold every single time. 🥇🐾

This Christmas, Maizie isn’t wishing for much. Just a soft place to rest, loving hands to pet her, and a family who will see her for who she truly is — not her scars, not her past, but her incredible heart.
