🐾 Meet Penny – Our Official Shelter Mascot! 🐾

You may have seen her in the background of our photos or lounging in a sunbeam during a tour, but it’s time we made things official…

Say hello to Penny—our resident cat, chaos coordinator, and now official mascot of Almost Home Animal Rescue! 😸

Penny first came to us pregnant and in need of a safe place to have her kittens. She raised them like a pro and has made it clear she is staying. (We didn’t argue—she clearly runs the place.)

These days, Penny helps new animals adjust (she's especially good at caring for the new kittens), supervises staff and volunteers, and greets visitors.. And now, she’s stepping into the spotlight to answer YOUR frequently asked questions about the shelter, adoption, pet care, and more—all in her own sassy, whiskered voice.

So keep an eye out for Penny’s posts as she takes over the FAQ game one paw at a time!

THIS is why Almost Home exists. 💔🐾

Today, we welcomed a new dog into our care — one who is severely emaciated, covered in sores, and in desperate need of love, nourishment, and healing. His condition is heartbreaking, but he is now safe, warm, and finally on the road to recovery.

He has a long journey ahead — one that will include vet visits, medications, careful refeeding, and round-the-clock care. It won’t be quick, and it won’t be easy… but we are committed to him.

We want to be very clear: we will not be sharing any information about the previous owner or the situation. What matters now is that he’s getting the help he needs. 𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐤 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 — not his past.

Another reason we ask for kindness? Our staff and volunteers are heartbroken. We are the ones seeing him in person, caring for him, and watching him struggle to heal. The weight of this work is heavy — and while it's easy to throw blame and hate, it only adds to the emotional toll. The less negativity on this post, the better — for his sake, and for ours.

Gus likes the P**p Pail that the Southern Iowa Community Foundation grant provided for us.

Thank you to the SCICF grant for helping us tackle one of the less glamorous but totally necessary parts of shelter life - P**P! 🐾💩

Thanks to your support, we were able to purchase a new p**p pail system that helps keep our outdoor area clean, safe, and way more pleasant for everyone. As you can see it has multiple purposes and will get a lot of use!😉
