We'll get a final haul of new games just before we open but the rest are on the shelves. Furniture is being delivered daily through the end of next week. Hoping to have enough done to be able to schedule inspections over the next several weeks.

There's also a group in one of the U of I business classes doing a research project on The Scratching Post. They've created a 5 min survey and the more responses they get, the better. If you've got 5 min to share your thoughts, you can view the survey below. Responses are anonymous. https://illinois.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_20qfm0HR9qZns1M

It was sad when I realized we wouldn't be open in time to be a venue for but we're installing picture rail throughout the Cafe side to hopefully make it easier to display and swap out local art throughout the year. While you're enjoying the festival, if you come across an artist looking to display their work after the festival, or if YOU are an artist wanting to display their work, shoot us an email at [email protected] and let's chat!

We've also just started getting in some of the coffee equipment and furniture, and board game shelves are pretty much ready to start getting filled with games. 🥳🥳🥳

Our days have been consumed by doors for the last few weeks. Cat doors, reclaimed doors, hardware, casing, caulking. Painting to come. Installed 8 reclaimed doors. Took 5 doors to feel like we learned everything we needed to know. Never want to hang another old door again. 😆

If I were smart, I prob would've waited to order the barstools and refrigerators until we were closer to opening so they don't get covered in saw dust, but having cold drinks and comfy chairs at the ready while we work took priority. 😎

Installing reclaimed doors with custom frames is slow going bc we're not pros, but they're coming along. Tons of storage shelving has been built, quarantine kennels have been built and working through a lot of little woodworking projects to cover holes/pipes/etc. Still a long way to go but we'll get there.

I've been slacking on posting weekly bc my brain has been taken over by the diy construction lists we're working through but I'll try to be better at keeping up with it.

Our funky salvaged window wall is coming together. Last few weeks have been a lot of boring projects like painting storage rooms, water heaters and drop ceilings being installed in the back, but we should have some photo worthy projects over the next few weeks.

Don't forget you can still donate to Toby's surgery if you have $20 burning a hole in your pocket and you want to help our local cat rescue with this huge expense. https://www.givinggrid.com/uxshep

If you want to start helping local cats before we open, this is an excellent opportunity.

CATsNAP is the local non-profit rescue most of our cats will come from, and I worked with Toby a lot while volunteering with CATsNAP on their medical side. It is not an exaggeration when I say the sight of Toby's neck was something straight out of a horror movie when they took him in. Despite the amount of pain he must have been in, he still was constantly affectionate, trying to rub on you, head butting, and wanting to sit in your lap. Sweetest orange boy you ever did meet.

If it wasn't for rescues like CATSNAP cats like Toby wouldn't make it. This is the gritty behind the scenes work they do that is so essential to our cafe opening. The cats don't just show up all shiny and new. It takes a ton of volunteers, time and money to take in a homeless stray, get them spayed/neutered, vaccinated and treated for the slew of parasites and illnesses they invariably have until they are healthy and comfortable enough to come to our cat lounge.

Toby's injury is an extreme situation that in many cases may have been seen as too expensive and he would have been euthanized. Lucky for him CATsNAP stepped up and took him in, but his neck surgery at Perdue is coming up and this is a massive extra expense that small rescues like CATsNAP generally can't afford. If you can donate even a few dollars to help fund his surgery, every bit helps. Donation link is here https://www.givinggrid.com/uxshep

CATsNAP is a 501(c)(3) non profit so your donation is tax deductible.

Once we are open, we will be donating 20% of the profits from our food, drink and merch sales back to the rescues our cats come from, like CATsNAP, specifically so they can more easily fund cases like Toby. This will not be a one-off fundraiser. It is a permanent recurring donation we're committing to to help support the rescues that are so important to our space. So every brownie, pop or t-shirt you buy will help cats like Toby. 💞

Today we celebrate a truly inspirational leader whose vision for what our country could be inspires so many of us to do and be better; Dr Martin Luther King Jr. I hope The Scratching Post will be a space where you can feel safe and accepted. Hang in there, and stay safe everyone.

I'm kind of obsessed with our sconces. And new walkthrough video in the comments! Still lots of finishing work, cleaning and decorating to do, but getting a little closer everyday.

More painting done, more HVAC duct installed, glass installed in cat pod and vestibules, flooring delivered. (Don't worry. We're not covering the existing tile and wood floors. New flooring is for areas that only have a cement floor currently, and bathrooms, etc.)

Last two weeks I've learned that painting massive commercial space walls is not the same as painting your house. 🙃 Roller marks are the bane of my existence. Never had that problem on smaller walls. We're pros at avoiding them now, but will we go back and fix all of the first walls we did that are covered in roller marks? Maaaaaybe? 😆

This also happens to be the face I make when my husband wants to play Res Arcana which has been banned in our house due to the lack of good sportsmanship we exhibit while playing it. Our copy has been donated to the Scratching Post's library. 🤣

What games do you hope to see in the cafe? We already have a substantial list of almost 400 games which you can view on our website here: https://scratchingpostcu.com/cat-cafe-board-game-cafe-info/
But we will definitely have room for more!

Used more than 20 gallons of paint in the last four days. Probably at least another 20 to go. 😆

Glass isn't installed yet but the framing for the front cat pod and vestibules is in, and we finally have a ceiling in the back half of the cafe. 🥳
