The beauty of positive reinforcement training is that it increases the likelihood that a good behavior will be repeated. Adoption Policies
-Our adoption program is for individuals and families seeking a pet to live indoors and provide companionship.
-You must be 21 years of age or older to adopt.
-We recommend that all household members meet the animal during the adoption process. In some cases, we will make this a requirement.
--If you rent or lease your home, we require written or verbal approval from your landlord before you adopt a pet.
-If you currently own animals, making sure your pets are up-to-date on vaccinations and care can help expedite the adoption process.
-All cats, dogs, and rabbits will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption.
-Our adoption contract requires you to take your new pet to a veterinarian within one week of adoption. LOST PETS??? Stray pets found by the public and animals impounded by Champaign County Animal Control go directly to the Champaign County Animal Services Facility located at 210 S. Not every cat we meet at CCHS will thrive in a traditional home. Some cats find it overwhelmingly stressful to be confined, especially when they’ve spent most of their lives outdoors. When these feral or semi-feral cats arrive at our shelter, it’s still our mission to make sure they have access to housing and care.

The Working Cat Program at CCHS provides positive outcomes to cats not behaviorally suited for adoption into a home, WHILE benefitting their adopters with a natural, eco-friendly pest control solution.

Here are some recent “working cats” Paprika, Sandiego, and Salt, settling into their new "home base".

Their adopters have created reliable indoor shelter for them, and will provide food, water, and necessary vet care for the remainder of their lives. In return, these feline friends will help with pest control, as studies show even the scent of a cat on property will deter pests. And while some of these cats prefer to stay distant, some do grow to offer varying levels of companionship.

All Working Cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, ear tipped, vaccinated, and treated with flea and tick preventative. If you have suitable indoor/outdoor space where a cat can thrive, such as barns, sheds, or warehouses, please consider providing a second chance to a deserving feline friend. There is no fee to adopt from the program. However, all donations are appreciated so that we can continue to operate this program.

Yoko just wanted to say, "thank you!" Thanks to all of you for checking in, and for spreading our programs and her adoption profiles. Thanks to our donors, who fund every aspect of her pet care! And many, many thanks to our dedicated team members and volunteers, who ensure she has a clean environment, fresh food, engaging toys, and time to play every day.

What else could she want? A family of course!!!!

A shelter can never be the same as a home (and toys) of her own, but while she waits to meet her perfect fit, she's glad you're all here to be our community.

Yoko is currently our longest resident, having been with us since January. She's shy at first, but please don't overlook this goofy, goofy girl 😁

Meet Zahara! She looks oh-so-serious in her photo, but that's just an obligatory feline facade. A volunteer spent time with her today and raved about how friendly and interactive she is. She's about 12 years old, but that only makes her more interesting. Why choose a foolish kitten when you could have a wise and beautiful feline specimen like Zahara?

If you follow our foster friends, PupsIsPups, you might remember the 'candy' litter from February/March of this year. And you'll probably be surprised to hear that one of these 'sweet' dogs is back at the shelter! Meet York.

He's grown so much from the new puppy we first met! But at 7 months old, York is still energetic, loving, playful, and looking for his forever home. He is full of smiles and ready for fun! In addition to photos, we have linked some videos of him playing with his siblings below (btw if you like puppy videos, you should be following PupsIsPups!). As with all puppies, we require socialization training upon adoption to help your new family thrive.

Learn more about York, and all of our available pets, below! Will you come meet him this week?

Bon Jovi and David Bowie just kicked off a surprise residency 😮 The limited engagement originally featured Bryan Adams as well, but he recently exited the lineup, citing a desire to "spend time with his family."

How long will the act last for these two? Hopefully just a few days. They want to go home, too! 🐾💕

Oh-- they're kittens here at CCHS! Come meet David Bowie, Bon Jovi, and all of our cats available for adoption during their "meet and greet" hours:

🤩Wednesday through Friday 2 PM - 7 PM
🤩Saturday and Sunday 12 PM - 5 PM

Which Bon Jovi or David Bowie lyrics do you think best caption these photos? Let us know!

Your dinner plans for next Thursday? Portillo's, of course! Support the shelter when you bring together friends and family for dinner. 20% of your dinner at Portillo's will be donated back to the dogs, cats, and critters here.

Order in person, at the drive through, or online. The flyer has more information on how to support the event based on how you prefer to enjoy dinner! You will need the flyer to ensure that your support counts.

CCHS is entirely funded by the generosity of our community, so we hope dining-to-donate and other events are a fun and easy way for anyone to have fun and help animals.

Where else should we dine to donate this summer? Let us know in the comments down below!

After an emergency tooth extraction, Bane is ready to be available for adoption again!

Bane is a 1-year-old Pit Bull Terrier and American Bulldog mix available for adoption. Bane had shattered a tooth while on the adoption floor, and needed an emergency extraction and plenty of rest before he could visit with the public again. No worries though, our staff was sure to spoil him as much as we could! Bane is as goofy as he looks, and is an especially sweet boy! Please enjoy these photos of him while he was out on his vacation away!

If you are interested in adopting Bane, please come in and visit with him during our open hours!

Riyah, a 1-year-old Pitbull Terrier and Catahoula Leopard mix is a Staff Favorite! Here's what our Animal Care Staff member has to say about Riyah:

"Riyah is an incredibly sweet and energetic girl. Her face lights up the moment she knows she knows it's time for a walk. She loves to play outside at any chance she gets and will play fetch with you until she's all tuckered out. She's been having a hard time at the shelter surrounded by noise and other animals. But the second you get her in a comfortable environment the difference is like night and day. She would love an active home with just her humans and a tennis ball"

Riyah is availalbe for adoption here at CCHS and would love nothing more than to find her forever home! Please consider stopping in and meeting with Riyah, it may take her a few minutes to warm up, but with some patience (and good treats!) she is sure to capture your heart!

Curry here has an important PSA to pet owners: it's time to get ready for the July 4th weekend! In the US, more pets are lost during the days surrounding July 4th than any other time of the year. The combination of increased time outside, firework celebrations, gatherings and travel, and more, lead to many families being separated. Even if you are confident that your pet is well-trained, couldn't escape, and wouldn't react to fireworks, now is the time to make sure:

🎆 Pet collars and tags have up to vaccinations, licenses, and contact information
🎆 Gates, fences, and pet doors are secure
🎆 Your microchip company has accurate contact information

Let's keep pets in their homes this Independence Day weekend!

Curry is an affectionate, 2-year-old dog, looking for her family. Champaign County Animal Control found her as a stray, so we think she'd approve this message! She's now at CCHS, looking for a family who will keep her close. Will you give her a home?

CCHS will be closed on Wednesday, June 25th. We are so sorry if you had planned to come out to the shelter tomorrow! You can still meet the pets available for adoption online at https://www.cuhumane.org.

Even though our doors are closed to the public tomorrow, our team will be here, working hard to take care of animals in need. Pets need our help every day of the year, so if theirs is a team you want to join, consider becoming one of our dedicated staff members or volunteers!

We will reopen soon! See you then 😺🐶🐰🐹
