As temperatures in the area are picking up it’s important to stay aware of heat stress and dehydration signs in calves.

Here are some to watch for:
⚪️Faster breathing rate
⚪️Sunken in eyes
⚪️Dry mouth and nose
⚪️Pale sticky gums
⚪️Lethargy and Weakness

If possible offer calves access to shade and plenty of cool, clean water.

If you are concerned about calves, you can give Dr. Tyler a call about fluid therapy.

Check out this Bull vaccine guide and schedule your annual Breeding Soundness Exam for all Herd Bulls today! Insurance programs require annual BSE’s to renew policies. If a bull fails a BSE they can be re-checked in 15 or 30 days, however if the bull fails again a replacement bull should be found and tested.

Ensuring these steps are taken will prepare your herd for breeding efficiency!

Have you struggled to keep calves healthy this calving season?

You may be interested in learning more about the Sandhills Calving System shown below. This system is meant to move cattle frequently enough to ensure young cattle are not being continually exposed to pathogens. Typically, cattle are grouped by age shortly after birth and continue to expose newly born calves to clean pasture. In this system you will need to have the space to spread your pairs out as well as adequate fencing and water to keep calves in.

Ensure you are still keeping an eye on all calves in each pasture and be sure to call Dr. Tyler if you have any health questions!
