📢 Holiday Closure Notice 📢

The Cherokee County Animal Shelter will be closed on Thursday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and is recognized as a federal holiday honoring freedom and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

The shelter will reopen and resume normal business hours on Monday.

If you have an animal-related emergency during this time, please contact Cherokee County Dispatch through the appropriate emergency channels.

Thank you for your understanding, and we wish everyone a safe and meaningful holiday.

🚨🐱 KITTEN EMERGENCY 🐱🚨

Y'all, we currently have more cats than Jimmy Carter had peanuts.

We've got more kittens than a church potluck has deviled eggs.

More cats than Dollar General has things you didn't come in to buy.

More kittens than Alabama has humidity in July.

More cats than a small-town Facebook group has opinions.

More kittens than a state-line gas station has lottery tickets.

At this point, if you leave your car window down too long, there's a decent chance you'll come back to find a kitten sitting in the driver's seat asking where we're headed.

These little fuzzballs are approximately 8-10 weeks old and available for adoption right now. We have them in all makes, models, colors, and personalities. Some are sweet and cuddly. Some are tiny agents of chaos. Most are both.

They're all equipped with:

✔️ Tiny toe beans
✔️ Unlimited purring capability
✔️ The ability to turn any cardboard box into a luxury condominium
✔️ A PhD in sprinting across your house at 3 a.m.
✔️ The natural instinct to knock one specific item off your table while maintaining eye contact

Honestly, we're getting outnumbered over here. Every time we think we've counted them all, another kitten appears like somebody unlocked a bonus level.

We've reached the point where the cats are starting to look at us like we're the ones being sheltered.

So if you've been thinking about adding a furry little roommate to your home, now is the perfect time. Whether you're looking for a professional lap warmer, an expert biscuit maker, or a tiny supervisor whose only job is to judge you from across the room, we've got you covered.

🚨 BIG DOG ALERT 🚨

Folks, meet Raven and Zelda. These two beautiful Great Dane mix sisters are about a year old, around 70 pounds each, and have somehow mastered the art of being both majestic giants and complete goofballs at the exact same time.

One minute they're standing tall like they own a castle. The next minute they're tripping over their own feet because a butterfly flew by and distracted them.

Now, a few fun Great Dane facts:

🐾 Great Danes are often called the "Apollo of Dogs" because of their size and elegance.

🐾 Despite looking like they could guard a medieval kingdom, most Danes are giant cuddle bugs who believe personal space is a government conspiracy.

🐾 Many Great Danes don't realize they're large dogs. They are fully convinced they are lap dogs. Your opinion on this matter is irrelevant.

🐾 Their hearts are usually just as big as their bodies. They tend to be affectionate, loyal, and incredibly people-oriented.

And Raven and Zelda fit that description perfectly. They are sweet, friendly, goofy, and always ready to make you laugh. If you've ever wanted a dog that can simultaneously protect your house and accidentally knock over your sweet tea with its tail, these girls may be exactly what you're looking for.

Just imagine coming home after a long day and being greeted by 70 pounds of happiness that acts like it's been waiting for your return since the Civil War ended.

Our furry crew is available in a variety of makes, models, colors, sizes, and energy levels. Some are cuddle experts, some are professional treat inspectors, and some are still determining whether the vacuum cleaner is a government conspiracy.

It was an honor to not only speak, but also to represent Cherokee County and the Cherokee County Animal Shelter at this year’s Alabama Animal Control Association Conference.

We are incredibly thankful for the opportunity to share about our shelter, connect with others across the state, and represent the hard work being done in our community every single day.
