This past week, VHI taught a webinar on Advanced Strategies for Homeopathic Cases. I presented a case of a 6-year-old dog who had advanced cancer, and wanted to add homeopathy on to his chemotherapy treatment. While homeopathy works very well as a stand-alone therapy for chronic disease and conditions such as cancer, it can also be very effective alongside conventional treatments such as chemotherapy, and also with other integrative therapies such as TCM, acupuncture, chiropractic, and ozone therapy. I used to turn away patients that had already started chemotherapy because I felt that the drugs interfered with the homeopathic treatment, but experience has shown me that this is not true. Homeopathy is a powerful healing modality, and it can work even if there are strong drugs being used alongside it.

For the dog with cancer whose case I presented in the webinar, adding homeopathy to his cancer treatment improved his physical and emotional state, and gave him a very good quality of life. He lived longer than his vet thought he would, his appetite improved and his anxiety diminished, and he did not suffer at the end of his life - he even died in his sleep at home. These cases are sad when we cannot cure them, but even when there is advanced cancer, homeopathy helps by improving quality of life, easing pain, diminishing side effects of chemotherapy, and strengthening the vital force of the patient instead of suppressing it. Homeopathy respects the wisdom of the body, and where there is life, there is the potential for healing.

Dr. Lisa is assisting a veterinary team at an elephant sanctuary to bring homeopathic healing to the pachyderms! https://globalelephants.org/ We are excited to share the story of Rana's healing journey with homeopathy in a series of upcoming posts. But before we tell you the story of Rana and how homeopathy is helping her, we have a very important question for you.

At 65 years old and weighing over 8000 lbs., Rana is not your typical homeopathic patient. When taking a homeopathic remedy, people hold the pellets under their tongue. In dogs and cats, we tap the pellets into their lip pouch, or dissolve the remedy in water and sq**rt it into their mouth. How do we get a homeopathic remedy into an elephant?

Homeopathy treats patients with diseases, rather than the disease itself. In homeopathy, it is more important to understand how a patient with a disease looks, feels, and acts, rather than diagnosing a patient with 'having a certain disease'. Homeopathy individualizes treatment for each patient and their unique presentation of illness, rather than their disease category.

Mighty Mouse answers cold weather questions to help her furry friends stay warm and safe!

How do you know when it is too cold for your pets to play or walk outside? This depends on whether you are asking a Chihuahua or an Alaskan Malamute! Each pet is different in their tolerance for cold and snow. In general, if your pet is shivering or holding up a paw or reluctant to walk, they are too cold.

Ways to help them include warm jackets, paw protection in the form of booties, and wiping off their paws after walks to remove any ice melt.

The following case is a great example of the benefits of knowing homeopathy first aid for your pet! There is still time to register for our January 2025 Pet Parent Class – Homeopathy: First Aid for Pets. More information is available at https://www.vethomeopathy.org/pet-classes.html

Lilly is a very active ten-year-old Llewelyn English Spaniel. In late November, she started limping, and her human discovered that she had broken off the entire nail from the middle toe of her front paw. She was licking the paw, is reluctant to walk on it, and will not tolerate wrapping it. Lilly’s mom has a homeopathy kit at home, and reached out to her homeopathic vet for advice on what remedy to give. She had soaked the paw in an Epsom Salt bath and then taken pictures, which she sent by text.

The homeopathic remedy that Lilly needed is used to treat painful injuries to nerve-rich areas such as the nails and paws. She did not need to go to the vet or to the ER, and her case was treated at home using a single homeopathic remedy for a total of 4 doses over a weekend. The remedy that helped Lilly is one of the remedies we will be discussing in our first aid class for pets in January. Please follow the link above to learn more about the class, and to reserve your seat!

Homeopathy heals without harm. This gentle yet powerful approach to healing is the foundation of my veterinary practice. In an effort to grow the veterinary homeopathic community, I have joined two of my colleagues, Laura Weis and Rosy Ramírez to create a post- graduate course for veterinarians and veterinary students that teaches the art of homeopathic healing for animals.
In addition to this foundations course in veterinary homeopathy, we will provide advanced training and continuing education for our homeopathic colleagues. We are Veterinary Homeopathy Institute. The Foundations course is open now for enrollment for the next class in May 2023. Join our community of compassionate veterinary healers.

Veterinary Homeopathy Institute provides training for veterinarians in the medical art of classical homeopathy.

Environmental damage is one of many reasons I discourage clients from using topical pesticides on the furried family members. These do not just risk damage to our pets' health (remember the label tells you these chemicals are hazardous to humans and not to let them come into contact with your skin while you are applying the full tube to your pet's skin), but to the environment your dogs play in. Please do not take this to mean that the internal (oral) pesticides are any safer for your pet, they are just circulating in your dog's organs instead of their skin.

It has been a known concern for YEARS that topical pesticides on pets for fleas and ticks are polluting the environment. I am grateful to VIN (veterinary information network) for publishing this study. My favorite safe alternative for insect repellents on pets are products by Wondercide.

Sincerely, Dr. Lisa Melling

This is the response I got from my Congressman after emailing my concerns about the FDA's plans for homeopathic remedies. We are being heard. ONE MORE DAY, if you have not responded, please do. You do not even have to write anything personal, just submit the pre-written form letter provided in the link. This can mean a world of difference to everyone being able to choose how they want their medical care to go...suppression of symptoms with drugs, or strengthening and healing the body with homeopathic treatment...

COMMITTEE ON VETERANS' AFFAIRS

Dear Dr. Melling:

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns regarding the United States Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) proposed guidance on unregulated homeopathic products. It is an honor to serve the people of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, and I appreciate your thoughts on this important matter.

The FDA issued a revised draft of its guidance on homeopathic drugs in October 2019 to better define the agency's position on those products. This guidance does not establish any legally enforceable responsibilities and is only intended to make suggestions or recommendations. Included in it is the FDA's recognition of homeopathic drug products as those labeled by the manufacturer as "homeopathic," and contains only active ingredients and dilutions listed in the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States. Additionally, the FDA anticipates many homeopathic drugs will fall outside its regulatory scope, which, combined with the non-binding nature of the guidance document, should not restrict patients' access to homeopathic remedies.

Homeopathic remedies can afford patients effective alternative treatments when conventional methods have failed. However, we must also ensure manufacturers are held accountable to consumers for the safety and efficacy of their products. As your Representative, one of my top priorities is the wellbeing and health of our communities, and I will continue to advance sound, evidence-based legislation addressing access to safe homeopathic remedies. If you would like to submit your comments to the FDA as well, you may do so at https://beta.regulations.gov until January 23, 2020. Please know I will keep your thoughts on this issue in mind should Congress consider any legislation regarding the FDA and its approach towards homeopathic medicines.

Again, thank you for contacting me about this important issue. It is an honor to represent you in the U.S. House of Representatives, and I am here to help in any way possible. Please do not hesitate to call if I may ever be of service. I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Kind regards,
(signed)

I got this amazing gift from a client tonight. She is such a strong advocate for holistic healing, and I have watched her pets reverse in age each year with the fresh food and homeopathic care she gives them. Thank you Leah Seely, I am grateful to have you in my practice.

The FDA is working to make unrealistic restrictions on homeopathic medicines (also called homeopathic remedies). If you or your pet have ever been treated with homeopathy, you know the value of keeping this healing medical art available to everyone. Those of us in the field of homeopathy are working to educate the FDA on the safety and extensive study and testing of homeopathic medicines. Homeopathic remedies have only been tested on healthy human volunteers, never on animals, the sick, or in conjunction with other drugs. Homeopathic remedies are one of the most thoroughly studied and carefully researched medicines on the market, having been researched and prescribed successfully for more than 200 years.

I have seen homeopathy in my own practice heal very scary diseases including cancer, treat pain, shock and not injure the patient in the process. Homeopathy respects the ability of the body to heal. It stimulates health rather than suppressing symptoms of disease. And it does so without harm.
