This farm is Detroit Made #313

Detroit will always be a part of our story. Itโ€™s where our roots (literally ๐ŸŒฑ) first took holdโ€”where our careers began, where our love unfolded, and where this farm found its FIRST supporters. If it werenโ€™t for the love and support we got from The D, we might have never had the confidence to chase this crazy dream of ours and grow this farm!

So as we plant new roots (again, literally ๐ŸŒฑ) Up North, Detroit will always be home in so many ways. And weโ€™re grateful to still have the opportunity to share our produce in and around the city, and we canโ€™t wait to welcome more folks out on the farm Up North! ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿšœ

Cheers to you, Detroitโ€”now and always! See yโ€™all this spring! ๐ŸŒท๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿฅฌ

๐Ÿ’กFun Fact: Detroit (the Midwest) was quite literally our middle pointโ€”Jaz from the East Coast, Ris from the West WEST Coast. This city is where our story together began. ๐Ÿ’—

Letโ€™s talk about ๐Ÿฅš๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ“
Dolly. Rosie. Bitty. Cooper. Carolyn.

These were our backyard chickens. When we first jumped into farming, we went full throttle yallโ€”chickens and all (even though we donโ€™t even really like eggs). But for those who enjoy meat, milk, or eggs, experiencing animal husbandry firsthand is a powerful lessonโ€”and sometimes, pretty fun!

Caring for animals is a completely different experience from growing carrots or sunflowers:
โœ… Sourcing + amending feed
โœ… Understanding the literal pecking order
โœ… Building coops + chicken runs
โœ… Cleaning + predator-proofing
โœ… Daily opening + closing the coop
โœ… Health monitoring + care

And this is just for a tiny backyard flock.

Right now, there are farmers on the frontlines of a devastating bird flu outbreak. Millions of laying hens have been lost, and while most consumers feel this through rising egg prices, the impact runs deeperโ€”farm workers are losing their flocks, their livelihoods, and in some cases, even facing health risks themselves.

Maybe like us, events like these have you thinking about the fragility of our current food system. So what can you doโ“Support small farms. Buy local. Know your farmers and their farming practices. And remember that behind every cartonโ€”every mealโ€”there are real people working hard to keep food on our tables.

Every day. Weโ€™re q***r. Weโ€™re Black. Weโ€™re Asian. Weโ€™re farmers. And right now, saying that out loud feels more important than ever.

We donโ€™t always talk about how our identities shape the way we navigate an industry (and many spaces) where weโ€™re drastically underrepresented. Or how we grapple with our communitiesโ€™ complex relationships with land and food in the U.S.โ€”stories of resilience intertwined with histories of injustice. How we aspire to honor our ancestors, land, and community through what and how we grow. Or how farming, existing in this space, is us practicing resistance.

We donโ€™t always talk about these things because theyโ€™re woven into everything we do. Consciously and unconsciously, our identities, cultures, and histories show up in every choice we make, every seed we plant, and every harvest we bring in. Itโ€™s not better or worseโ€”it just is.

But maybe we should talk about it more. Because farming isnโ€™t just about food. Itโ€™s about our shared connection to the land, building resilient communities, and the cultures we honor. Thatโ€™s what you support when you support this farm. Thatโ€™s what weโ€™re growing together ๐ŸŒฑ

โ€œTwas the shortest day, twas the longest nightโ€ โ€” someone, somewhere, possibly with a cup of mulled wine โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒ‘

Itโ€™s Midwinter, yโ€™allโ„๏ธ Cozy up and take a mini solstice dive with your friendly local farmers!

Besides getting closer to saying goodbye to those never-ending gray Michigan days, why are your farmers really excited about the Winter Solstice? Well, hereโ€™s the scoopโ€ฆ

So, right now, the sun is as far south as it gets in the sky, meaning itโ€™s doing its best to avoid us here in the Northern Hemisphere. BUTโ€”good news! Tomorrow, that sunshine starts its long journey back toward us โ˜€๏ธDaylight starts creeping in again, and thatโ€™s a ๐ŸŽ to farmers everywhere in our region!

For CENTURIES (yep, thatโ€™s rightโ€”centuries!) humansโ€”especially farmersโ€”have been all about tracking the solstices. Why? Because sunlight = growth = food = survival ๐ŸŒฑ

More daylight = faster growthโ€จLess daylight = slower growth

It might look like farmers are just planning around the seasons, but guess whatโ‰๏ธThe seasons are the way they are because of the sun and the tilt of the earth (crazy, right?). So by the second week of February, weโ€™ll be getting just enough daylight (about 10 hours and counting) to start planting our early spring cold-hardy crops in the high tunnels, picture: kale, arugula, tatsoi, carrots, beets ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿซ›๐Ÿง…

So, letโ€™s get in the Midwinter spirit ๐ŸŽ‰ JOIN US in raising a glassโ€”like our ancestors may haveโ€”and CHEER to the return of the light! May this new daylight bring fresh growth, good vibes, and sunnier days ahead for all of us โœจ

We built THIS โฌ†๏ธ

โ€œWeโ€ as in: Chris, Daniel, Derrick, Izabela, Jay, Joel, Katrina, Lori, Mari, Patty, and Rolf, guided by the amazing pro team, Blake + Cole. Huge thanks to each and every one of youโ€”we couldnโ€™t have asked for a better crew!
โ€”
On a wet, foggy, moody fall morning, neighbors (from Up North + Detroit), friends (new + old), and local farmers GATHERED with us to build our second high tunnel ๐Ÿ”จ Several folks shared with us how much they felt a sense of community throughout the build. As many first-time introductions were being made, we laughed, we shared stories, we made connections, AND together we even held on for dear life against 40mph wind gusts ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

Looking back at LAST week fills our hearts more than words can say, especially as we process all thatโ€™s unfolded THIS week. Thereโ€™s a special community here in our little rural corner of Northern Michigan and our community showed up for us last week in a very special way โœจ

Weโ€™re so excited to see what this new greenhouse will growโ€”and just as excited to keep fostering relationships and showing up for ALL the communities that show up for us ๐Ÿ’—
