Recently there has been an uptick in the FYP of people asking why "breeders" have a problem with people breeding rabbits for "pets". So, here's our 2 cents.
We have no issues with rabbits being pets. In fact, it is our greatest wish that rabbits that age out of our breeding program or who don't make breed sop be pets in well informed, rabbit loving homes.
Here is the legitimate concern; people who breed rabbits to show will actively w**d out health problems.
NONE OF US are making money on rabbits and I laugh to myself every time someone implies we do. We are not motivated to sell a rabbit for profit.
We become concerned for all involved with pet breeders because they breed for "cute" not necessarily for health.
How many rabbits have landed in a rescue because of a health problem, like a malocclusion, that is ABSOLUTELY GENETIC.
We worry. We love rabbits. We don't want anyone to feed into the long line of rabbits that find themselves in difficult circumstances.
