The Stolen Spurs of Buffalo Bill
By Emmett E., 2025 IFA Cowboy Poetry Intermediate Division Winner

Upon the plains where legends stride,
Beneath the Western stars abide,
A statue stands, so proud, so still,
Immortalizing Buffalo Bill.

Gertrude’s hands with care did mold,
A figure bold, both brave and cold,
With spurs upon his boots so fine,
A tribute to the frontier line.

But one dark night in forty-nine,
A crime was wrought beneath moonshine.
The spurs were stolen, wrenched away,
A piece of history led astray.
The town did mourn, their hearts did ache,
For treasures lost, and vows they’d take:
To honor Bill, his spirit bold,
And forge new spurs from Western gold.

A craftsman’s hand, a welder’s flame,
Restored the spurs to stake his claim.
In seventy-nine, secured once more,
They gleamed anew, as tales of lore.

Now standing firm, both proud and strong,
The Scout endures through time so long,
A symbol true of Western will—
And the stolen spurs of Buffalo Bill.
