Many of you know that I just returned from an amazing trip to Africa. While it was beautiful and fun, it was also life changing. As a behavior geek, it is impossible to turn off the training and behavior mode, even on vacation. Even in the bush of Africa. Even with overwhelming beauty, and especially when observing wild animals in their own habitat. I was amazed and thrilled to see the natural behaviors and relationships formed among the animals, even those of different species. I loved watching the differences in behavior of prey animals vs predators. I melted when a mama put her baby in a safer place, or signaled safety. My heart soared to see offspring greet a parent when he reappeared from a place, just out of sight. My heart skipped a beat when I felt the grumbles and rumbles of communication between elephants. Training dogs for so many years, I take for granted how much of their language I naturally understand. Watching the wild animals, I used all of my senses to try and learn as much as I could about each species in the time we had observing them. Whether it was watching rhinos scratch an itch, or a baby elephant drink water, or an Impala listen intently for danger, I soaked it all up, and am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have spent time learning and enjoying such beauty.

Even adolescent pups can learn to relax and settle while there is activity around them. Eight month old Birdie has been practicing, and getting rewarded (a lot!) for calm and settle behaviors. This was Birdie during human mealtime today. Even the presence of yummy food didn't prevent a beautifully relaxed settle behavior. Go Birdie!!

Provide appropriate outlets for exercise and mental stimulation, then reward/reinforce the calm, and you will get more of it.

Puppies and games of chase...how can you not smile? Puppies need to play, and it can be so much fun when they find good friends to run and interact with in positive ways. They learn from one another, and, if you have built foundation skills first, you can expand their skill set by incorporating training into play sessions (working with distractions). Done well, it helps build their ability to respond, even when there are distractions.

Give your pups an extra hug today and send love to the family of this amazing boy, who has left us far too soon. An acute, hidden illness has stolen him in his youth, and many hearts are breaking. I am thankful for the time we were able to spend with him during his time here, but we were looking forward to so many more games of fetch and play dates. His precious family is grieving hard, and we grieve with them.

So many of my clients have lost beloved dogs recently. It's never easy, and the grief is deep. It's real, and it is hard...no matter how long they lived! We never have enough time with these precious animals we are lucky enough to walk beside in this life. While you can, take that walk. Let them sniff. Play. Bring treats and praise them generously. Laugh at the puppy ridiculousness. Train and live using positive reinforcement, then treasure the memories you create!

You can't see it, but this pup (at 14 years old) was smiling during her entire walk in the woods. She sniffed ALL the smells, and was so happy to have her little girl with her. Where do your dogs like to walk and smile?

Calls for training for all the newly acquired puppies have started rolling in, and we are having fun! Having a puppy can be a challenge, but puppy training is incredible to be part of. Puppies are little sponges for learning, and we make it fun.

We will be closed beginning at 11am today through Monday, December 30th, as we enjoy time with family and friends through this holiday season. Thank you for another amazing year of working with you and your dogs. We look forward to seeing you and your pups again soon!
