When we’re around horses, it’s easy to miss the quiet ways they try to communicate with us, especially when we’re focused on a task or rushing through our routine.

Horses are always talking to us.
That sideways glance, the quick stop in eating, a little chew or blink. These are all ways they might be saying, “I’m not quite sure about this,” or “Can you give me a little space?”

Often these behaviours are labelled as “naughty” or “dominant” when really, they’re just a horses way of doing their best to be heard. If we pay attention to those early subtle signals, we’re much less likely to see those bigger behaviours show up later on.

Let’s give our horses a voice before they have to shout. 🧡

Our After School Camp kicked off last week, and it was such a joy to watch our campers dive into the amazing world of horses and their incredible senses!

This week, we’re taking our learning even deeper.

We’ll explore:The importance of a horse’s whiskers and how they help them navigate their world, Just how far a horse can hear, How many taste buds a horse has,The fascinating ways horses learn, and we’ll begin designing and building our very own obstacle course for the horses to enjoy!

We can’t wait to see the excitement and creativity our campers bring to this week’s adventures!

When I first envisioned offering enrichment sessions, I dreamed of people discovering TheraBarn as a place to recharge, connect, and find peace alongside our herd.

Yesterday, I truly felt that vision come to life!

When booking an enrichment session, you’ll have three wonderful options to choose from:

Quiet Connection – Spend time simply being with a horse, whether through grooming or quietly standing together.

Enrichment Activity – Work with us to create a fun, stimulating activity designed specifically for the horse.

Creative Expression – Share a unique experience by painting with the horse.

Each session is an opportunity to build a meaningful bond while nurturing both you and the horse.

At the end of the day, everything we do here at EquiScholars comes back to one thing, making life better for horses.

We’re passionate about behaviour and the science behind it, because it helps us really understand how horses think, feel, and respond to the world around them. Even small shifts in how we work with them can make a huge difference, and that’s something worth sharing.

For us, it’s not about having all the answers. It’s about learning, creating, and sharing what we know, together. That’s why we put so much into building resources and designing curriculums that help others learn too. Whether someone’s just starting out or has been around horses their whole life, there’s always something new to explore.

When we collaborate, when we keep the conversation open, we all move forward – and the horses benefit from that the most.

✨🐴 Why Some Horses Don’t Engage with Enrichment 🐴✨

When a horse doesn’t show interest in enrichment, it’s not always about the activity—it’s often about the state of their nervous system.

Fearful or shut-down horses may be stuck in a fight, flight, freeze, or fiddle-about response. This is the body’s way of prioritising survival.

In this state:

🌿The sympathetic nervous system is dominant
🌿Hormones like cortisol and adrenaline increase
🌿Blood moves to muscles for fast reactions
🌿The brain shifts away from learning and exploration

This is why enrichment must be introduced slowly and intentionally.

✅ 3 ways to introduce enrichment to horses:

💡 Start at a distance – Allow the horse to observe the item without pressure. Curiosity often begins with simply watching.
💡 Keep it predictable – Stick to familiar routines and introduce one thing at a time to avoid overwhelming the nervous system.
💡 Use natural, low-arousal activities – Scattered forage or gentle scent exploration is a great starting point. Observe your horse’s response, and adjust accordingly. Some may need more time, others might show signs of readiness sooner.

True enrichment invites, it doesn’t demand. It creates space for natural behaviours to return when the horse feels secure enough to explore. 💚
