Good Dog University We help your dog put its best PAW forward. Dr. Weaver is an approved AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and Temperament Test Judge. Classes:
AKC S.T.A.R.

We have decades of experience using positive reinforcement for an engaged, happy dog! We help your dog put its best PAW forward! I am a certified evaluator for the American Kennel Club S.T.A.R. Puppy program, the Canine Good Citizen programs, and the Trick Dog programs. Small group classes using kind methods and positive reinforcement. While some classes prepare you to compete with your dog in AKC

dog shows for titles, many people take the classes just for fun and have a more obedient dog. Puppy: This class is for pups under 1 year and includes socialization and basic handling, leash manners. This class lasts 6 weeks and includes the test at the end so you can earn a certificate. Similar to pre-school but for puppies. $100 includes test. Canine Good Citizen: (6- 1 hour sessions with the test for a CGC title at the end) $100 per dog. Basic manners around other people and dogs, and calm during distractions. Heel on loose lead, sit, down, come, stay, etc. For many therapy dog certifications, the CGC is required (first half of the therapy dog testing). Rally (6- 1 hour sessions in preparation for earning a title at an AKC dog show) $100 per dog. This class will also include some fun and games and introduction to some agility equipment. This class is a great next step after the CGC even if you just want to have fun with your dog and not compete. Obedience (6- 1 hour sessions in preparation for earning a title at an AKC dog show) $125 per dog

Tuesday Training Byte: Stubborn dog or trainer issues?

I have owned a variety of breeds from various groups. Some breeds may often be labeled as "stubborn". Many hounds may fall into that category, and so do Rottweilers, etc. So really? Dogs are sentient beings and have feelings, but they do not have the same set of complex emotions as humans. When it a...

How is your dog's gate and door manners? Tuesday Training Byte: Teaching your dog not to rush to door.

A dog that rushes the door (or gate) is not only exhibiting bad manners, it can turn harmful. In earning a Virtual Home Manners title through AKC, door manners is part of the test. Since 1986, I have always owned several dogs at a time. Whether I am opening the door from the house to the yard, out f...

Wednesday Wisdom: Approaching a strange dog

Recently I have seen where some counties or states are trying to pass a dangerous dog law. In reviewing these proposed laws, a dog could be labeled as dangerous if it threatens to bite (or actually does bite) "unprovoked". The underlying problem is that people do not understand dog body language or....

Tuesday Training Byte: Teaching children proper dog interactions.

I know this might not sound like a dog training issue. Unfortunately, children under age ten make up the majority of dog bite victims, and often by the family dog. Parental supervision does not always work because the parents do not understand dog body language sufficiently to know when a dog is fea...

Tuesday Training Byte: Separation anxiety

During the pandemic when most people had to stay at home, many dogs developed separation anxiety. Here is a list of things the owner does that can create this problem:•Pet your dog, all the time•Talk to your dog, all the time•Allow your dog to follow you, all the time•Allow your dog to be on...

Dogs tend to have a clear preference on how they want to be petted. We tend to think that if they didn't like how we are petting them, they would react like a cat showing their disapproval. Dogs will tolerate petting on the head, and occasionally a hug, but they much prefer to be petted differently. See photo copied from "Doing No Harm" page.

Tuesday Training Byte: Dealing with food aggression.

There are several reasons why a dog becomes food aggressive. If he was in a shelter, or was a stray, or there were issues with food scarcity or bigger dogs taking his food, we may have a dog that growls or snaps at anyone or any dog that approaches him while eating. Another problem is the dog that j...

Are you having some problems getting your dog to listen or stop pulling on the leash? What about other manners? For many working people, they find it hard to commit to bringing their dog to a 6-week class. I do private training and behavior consultation! Naturally, I cannot fix every issue you may have with your dog in one hour, but I can give you lots of information and help to get on the right track. While dog training is an incremental process, you might be surprised how much of a difference a few new methods can make! I can help you communicate more effectively with your dog for real results. I charge $75/hour for this service.

Following my weekly training blog!

Recently a client asked if her 4 month old pup would grow out of the bad behavior of jumping up and biting. The short answer is that behavior that is "rewarded" will continue. Let's talk about rewards. Dogs are like young children and will engage in all sorts of naughty behavior to get your attentio...
