Our Story

The Santa Lucia Preserve — a private community, golf club and ranch club situated on 20,000 acres of majestic land — is a remarkable conservation community, where 300 families have chosen to permanently protect and collectively manage over 90% of their lands as wild natural habitat.

Though located mere minutes from historic downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, much like Hawaii’s “Island-Time” The Preserve has a cadence all its own, with an easy pace of life and distinct serenity afforded by the vast open stretches of ancient untamed land. Our staff, residents and members dedicate themselves to appreciating and stewarding the natural beauty of this unique geographical, historical and cultural setting.

Within our community are a wide array of lifestyle offerings, annual events and daily activities, including a golf course ranked in the top 100 in the U.S., the 18-acre Moore’s Lake, glamping tents, 100 miles of hiking trails, an expansive, multi-discipline equestrian operation, sports and aquatic center, and more.
