Sunday Funday ☀️💛🌼

Took Molly on a longer walk and to smell the dandelions. She walked by the neighbor’s barking dog, which is challenging for her, and made some noise but recovered pretty well. Decompressed after with a peanut butter lick mat. 🙂

We attempted to walk Dixie and Fiona together butttt that was chaotic. What they really wanted to do was run around the yard, jump, and play with each other, so that’s what we did! They are a great match for each other with similar energy levels and play styles. 💛

This is a great post. We expect WAY too much of dogs. They are domesticated predatory animals living in captivity and we control almost everything about their lives, often ignoring or trying to suppress genetics and natural behaviors/instincts, and expect them to be perfect.

Please be social and like people but not too social because jumping up is rude.

Please be energetic and want to go on walks with me but be able to calm down immediately afterwards.

Please be protective of me when I need it but not all the time.

Please tell me when someone is arriving or coming to the house but then calm down immediately so you don’t embarrass me.

Please hold your bathroom needs until I am able to let you out, even if that’s for hours, and make sure you only use this area.

Please be so loyal and devoted to me but not be anxious when I leave or am gone.

Please be playful but only when I want to as well and never play too rough.

Please be independent but immediately return to me if I need you.

Please ignore thousands of years of natural instincts because we live inside now.

Please let me touch your stuff and your body and your food at any given moment and not have a problem with it.

Please be okay with confinement and not be loud or get bored.

Please spend my work day relaxing but then walk politely on a 6 foot leash with me when we do go outside.

Please accept these human made substitutions for enrichment as just as good as the real thing.

Please save your chewing, shredding, digging and other outdoor behaviors only for items and areas that I designate and at times convenient to me.

Please get along with other dogs, even if they are pushy or rude, and never ever hump anything or anyone.

Please watch birds and squirrels and other small animals quietly and not chase them, especially on leash.

Please listen dutifully to me under any and all distractions.

Please eat the same food every day and only show interest in food I offer you in certain contexts, not at any other time.

Please accept these strangers touching and patting you in public because it makes us happy.

Please, do all these things. And you’ll be a “good” dog.

I could go on and on and on. But this is what I see and hear all day. It’s probably the most unfair deal you can imagine between two species, and yet you know what? They still try. Despite us humans not being okay with over HALF of the demands and expectations we put on them, they still try. We don’t deserve them, so we should learn to treat them as such.

Meet Dixie! Dixie is under a year old at about 10 months, and is a 37lb lanky teenager with long legs. She was in a foster home in SC where she was working on potty training (work in progress), crate training, and was friendly with dogs and cats!

The transition here was stressful for her, but she’s settling in more as days go by and she’s learning the new routine.

She’s very sweet! She can be a little nervous at first but she warms up quickly and then leans into you for pets. 😊 She has a playful puppy energy and would love an active home.

We’ll be working on counter-surfing and jumping. On walks, she’s very receptive to praise and treats, always looking back and checking in with me.

If you’re looking for an expert bug hunter, she’s really good at spotting any type of bug, especially crickets, outside in the grass and on walks! She also likes to find sticks and lay in the sun. ☀️

Meet Fiona! She’s about 2.5-3 years old and 43lbs. She came to us from SC, after being in the shelter since March.

She hasn’t had any accidents so far, and lays quietly in her kennel, content to chew on all her new bones and toys, even when other dogs are being loud. She seems very adaptable! When we picked her up, she was friendly and happy, with the personality of “okay, let’s go! what are we doing next?”

She’s only barked when trying to engage in play with another dog through the kennel. She did well in the shelter playgroups with other dogs. As soon as our required quarantine period is up, we’ll get her out playing here too. 😊

She’s playful, energetic, and really wants to run! She would love an active adopter to go on adventures with.

She’s learning about not counter-surfing and jumping, and is already picking up that if she keeps her feet on the ground, she’ll get a treat. She doesn’t seem used to being on a leash and it’s sometimes a bit like flying an erratic kite. 🪁😅 But we’ll work on that!

Okay before I introduce the new pups, I have some exciting news to share… Meko was adopted!! 🎉

Previous adopters Lisa and Kevin first brought Annie home back in December (who is all grown up now 🥹), and have now added Meko to the family! The girls are getting along well, learning each other’s play styles and energy levels, going on long walks in the woods together, and sharing the couch. 😊

Anyone who has met Meko knows how special and easy to love she is, and I couldn’t be happier that Lisa and Kevin (and Annie) also fell in love with her. 🖤

This was Ffion (we’re changing her name slightly to Fiona) getting ready for the start of her journey north last night, after waiting in the SC shelter since March.

✨ Molly Monday ✨

Reasons 13-16 why we (me, Michael, volunteers, etc.) love Molly:

13. Steph: The little kisses she gives.
14. Michael: She takes direction really well!
15. Emily: She’s comical when she gets the zoomies.
16. Keegan (pictured): I’ve never seen a dog that is so expressive. When I call her a “Pretty Girl,” she gives a look of pride and “Of course I am.” 😂
