Here in Northern California, fleas and ticks are always active, but are especially active during warmer seasons. This means each year during the Spring and Summer months, vets see an increase in patients with fleas and ticks, as well as flea/tick-borne diseases and symptoms, such as lyme disease, anemia, alopecia, or ehrlichia. In Southern California (LA), the county has even reported a record number of flea-borne typhus cases! This disease most often leads to hospitalization, and can be fatal. 🪰🦟🐜
While it is highly advised to have your pet on flea/tick prevention year-round, it is particularly important to ensure your pet is protected during these warmer months. Medications such as Nexgard and Credelio, which cover fleas and ticks, or Simparica Trio and Credelio Quattro, which cover fleas, ticks, heartworm, and intestinal parasites, are available at veterinary hospitals such as our own! 🪱💉💪
