For thousands of years, cats have been showing up for us. 🐈 Not just as companions. As mayors, union members, museum guards, hotel ambassadors, and at least one very dedicated klepto (Dusty, you know what you did!).

Is your black cat secretly a redhead? 🐈‍⬛

If your void-kitty's fur looks reddish-brown after a summer of window lounging, you're not imagining it. Black fur gets its color from a pigment called eumelanin; UV light slowly breaks it down, or "rusts" it.

A few more black-coat fun facts for your National Black Cat Day:
🐈 Many black cats carry hidden tabby stripes that can be spotted in bright sunlight, especially on kittens.
☀️ Sun-rusted fur usually darkens again once that coat sheds out.
🖤 Black cats can also "rust" when they age or have a deficiency of the amino acid tyrosine. If your cat is rusting and NOT a sunbather, it's worth a mention at the next vet visit.

The bond between a child and a cat can be one of the most beautiful things in a home, and it starts with one word: respect. Teach your child to let the cat come to them first. No grabbing, no chasing. Supervise every interaction until your child understands how to read their cat's signals and has the motor skills for gentle touch.

Until then, here are a few things you can do to help set the stage for a great relationship:

🍽️ Have your child help with feeding so your cat associates them with good things
🪴 Your child can tend a cat garden, growing cat-friendly plants like catnip, catmint and parsley
🎣 Your child can play with the cat with an interactive toy once they have the motor control for it

🗺️ Your cat mapped every inch of their territory. Then you moved the couch six inches. 😬

Cats sit squarely in the middle of the food chain, always hunting and always being hunted. That means they're hardwired to notice the slightest changes in sound, movement, scent, and anything that threatens their territory. 👀

What looks completely harmless to you can register as a real threat to them:

✅ The vacuum
✅ A slammed door
✅ A stranger who smells all wrong
✅ The carrier that only appears before something terrible happens

🎃 Every Halloween, millions of cats get stuffed into costumes. I get it, it looks cute. 👻 But I'm not a fan, and I have real reasons for it.

Cats communicate through body language, and clothing disrupts that entirely. It restricts movement, sends stress signals through their nervous system, and puts them in a situation where they have no say. 🐈‍⬛

While some cats may not be bothered by it, the question I always come back to is this: can your cat give consent? If they're frozen, hiding, or trying to escape the costume, they're already answering you.
