Hello, I'm Jodi! I have been training professionally since 2009, though most of my life I have spent in the company of dogs. I spent most of my days as a child in the woods hiking with my family and reading every animal related book that I could get my hands on. When I was 12 years old I discovered my love for training when I read a book on dog obedience. I soon applied what I had learned to an 8-week old Beagle puppy that we adopted from the animal shelter to become our family dog. I mastered everything in the books that I read, as well as threw in some funny little tricks that I saw the dogs on TV shows performing. I was convinced that my dog would someday get to be on television showing off all the things that I taught her. I continued this passion throughout college, graduating from Northern Kentucky University while training dogs full time. While going through the motions of being in the training profession, I also adopted a few dogs along the way.
The dog that changed my life was Killian, my Shetland Sheepdog. He was handed down to me by his original owner. She explained to me that due to her not having the time or the energy to solve his many behavioral quirks, she was going to have to take him to the shelter to be dropped off. He was what trainers call “highly reactive” around children, men, other animals, cars, and many other situations that were new to me. I went through my fair share of unbelievable successes, extreme failures, and many other stressful moments while training this deemed “aggressive” dog. I thought I knew a lot about training dogs before, but he made me realize that there is always room to learn new things. To this day he is my sidekick for any adventure, my guardian, and my best friend that I could ever ask for.
I have years of experience training group classes in obedience and therapy work, as well as private classes to meet the specific needs of the family and their canine. I have worked anywhere from a corporate pet store as their Senior Trainer, to being one of many highly skilled trainers at a public board and train facility. My overall goal is to utilize multiple tools and training methods for the dog that is in front of me. Due to having worked with countless breeds and ages, I realize that every dog has different needs and I like to apply what works for each dog individually to get the best results.
