Licking Valley Veterinary Services This page is to provide a way for the LVVS veterinary to speak to the public about a variety of issues.

We started as an equine ambulatory service with the goals of caring for and treating horses to prevent and cure disease and trauma. Now, we have expanded to treat dogs, cats, cattle and other species at farms and at our clinic.

A negative coggins test is required by law for the sale of an equine. WHY? Because there is no cure for EIA or Equine Infectious Anemia. Recently we were made aware of a case where a horse was purchased without a negative coggins test done. This horse then tested positive for EIA. In addition, 63 other horses were sold from the same facility. It is spread primarily through the transfer of infected blood via large biting flies (like horseflies and deerflies). EIA has no vaccination and no cure. Our best prevention is testing horses, requiring proof of a negative test before buying a horse, moving across state lines, or entering boarding stables and shows.
