Training Tip Tuesday ‼️ Building Confidence
Puppies *especially* need to build their confidence to grow into the balanced, well socialized adult dogs we all desire. An easy way to help build confidence is with agility training, like Miss Winnie is showcasing here🤩
Building confidence requires challenges, and you don’t have to break the bank buying agility equipment to challenge your pup. Be sure to start with a low level challenge to ensure success. Take into account your pups stature when choosing an elevated surface!
During your next walk, try coaxing your dog up onto any flat, elevated surface - benches, retaining walls, etc. Use treats as a lure if needed. Once they get up on the surface, reward and praise heavily. Repeat several times. If they still seem engaged, try some other known commands while on the elevated surface for an extra challenge.
If they are spooked and won’t jump fully up, reward for putting two paws up and holding them there. On your next walk, try getting them to jump up completely. Never force your dog to do this if they are uncomfortable or refusing!!
Introducing challenges to our dogs allow them to practice problem solving and interact with new things in their environment. When we plan these challenges it allows us to support their problem solving and aid in success. Every rep of successful navigation of a new task builds confidence!
Training games also build the bond between handler and dog. Not to mention they provide much needed mental stimulation to tire out high energy breeds!
