Bringing home a new puppy or kitten is incredibly exciting! 🎉 As you settle into life with your new furry companion, there's one important step Highline Veterinary Hospital recommends considering: pet insurance!
Enrolling your puppy or kitten in pet insurance early is one of the smartest decisions a pet parent can make. Why?

* Financial Peace of Mind: Unexpected accidents or illnesses can lead to significant veterinary bills. Pet insurance helps cover a portion of these costs, so you can focus on your pet's recovery, not the expense.
* Access to Best Care: With insurance, you're less likely to have to make difficult decisions based on cost, ensuring your pet gets the best medical care available when they need it most.
* Avoid Pre-Existing Conditions: The earlier you enroll, the less likely your pet will have developed pre-existing conditions that might not be covered later. Puppies and kittens are a blank slate!

* Routine Care Options: Some plans even offer wellness add-ons to help with routine visits, vaccinations, and preventive care.
Don't wait until an emergency strikes! Research pet insurance providers and consider enrolling your new puppy or kitten soon after they join your family. It's an investment in their health and your peace of mind.

Thinking about spaying or neutering your new puppy or kitten? 🤔 It's one of the best decisions you can make for their long-term health and behavior, and for the pet community!

At Highline Veterinary Hospital, we recommend spaying or neutering your pet at the appropriate age, which is typically between 5-6 months old for most breeds, though it can vary based on individual factors and breed size. Your veterinarian will help determine the best timing for your unique pet.

Benefits of Spaying (females):
* Prevents unwanted pregnancies: Crucial for controlling pet overpopulation.
* Reduces risk of mammary tumors: Especially if done before their first heat cycle.
* Eliminates uterine infections (pyometra): A common, life-threatening condition.
* No heat cycles: Eliminates messy periods and male attention.
Benefits of Neutering (males):
* Reduces roaming & escaping: Less likely to wander in search of a mate.
* Decreases aggression: Can reduce territorial and dominance-related aggression.
* Eliminates risk of testicular cancer: And reduces prostate problems.
* Reduces spraying/marking behavior: Especially in male cats.
Spaying and neutering is a routine procedure that contributes to a healthier, happier life for your pet and helps reduce the number of homeless animals in our community.

"I regret nothing!" - Every dog who just ate something they shouldn't have. 🤦‍♀️

Our latest patient thought a specific item was a gourmet meal. This is a perfect example of why, when pets ingest foreign objects, it's vital to get them to us right away! Time is of the essence to minimize risk and potentially complicated and unexpected procedures.

Once your pet arrives, we always recommend X-rays! These images give us a vital peek inside to:

Pinpoint exactly where the object is sitting.

Check for potential blockages or damage.

Guide us in getting it out safely.

Don't wait if your furry friend decides to sample something unusual! Always give us a call immediately!

Huge thank you to Dr. Buehler and team for caring for our friend ☺️

Potty training a new puppy or kitten? We know it can be a challenge, but with consistency and patience, success is just around the corner! 🐾

At Highline Veterinary Hospital, we've seen it all, and we're here to help. Here are our top tips and tricks to make potty training smoother for you and your new furball:

Establish a Routine: Take your puppy out or your kitten to their litter box frequently – especially after waking up, eating, playing, and before bed. Consistency is key!
Reward, Reward, Reward! When they go in the right spot, immediately praise them lavishly and offer a high-value treat. Make it the best thing ever!
Supervise Closely: Keep an eye on your pet when they're inside. Look for signs they need to go (sniffing, circling, whining, heading for the door).
Crate Training (Puppies): A crate can be a great tool as dogs naturally don't want to soil their sleeping area. Use it for short periods and never as punishment.
Designated Potty Spot: Always take your puppy to the same outdoor spot. For kittens, place their litter box in a quiet, accessible location.
Clean Accidents Thoroughly: Use an enzymatic cleaner to eliminate odors that might attract them back to the same "wrong" spot.
Patience is a Virtue: Accidents will happen! Don't punish, just clean up and continue with your routine. Positive reinforcement works wonders.
