🐾 Itchy Dog Month: Could Fleas Be the Culprit? 🦟

Even if you never see a flea, just one flea bite can trigger intense itching in some dogs! That's why year-round flea prevention is one of the best ways to help keep your pet comfortable and itch-free.

At Highline Veterinary Hospital, we offer several trusted options to fit your pet's lifestyle:

🟠 Bravecto – A long-lasting chew that provides up to 12 weeks of flea and tick protection with a single dose.
🔵 Revolution – A convenient monthly topical that protects against fleas while also helping prevent heartworm disease and treating certain intestinal parasites and ear mites.
🟢 Simparica Trio – An all-in-one monthly chew that protects against fleas, ticks, heartworm disease, and intestinal parasites.

Not sure which preventative is right for your pet? Our team is happy to help you choose the best option based on your dog's age, lifestyle, and health needs.

Rabies-Positive Bats in the Area 🦇

Twice this month, there have been reports of rabies-positive bats in our area. Please help keep your pets and family safe!

🐾 Make sure your pets’ rabies vaccines are up to date.
🚫 Never touch, handle, or approach a bat, especially one that appears sick, injured, or is active during the daytime.
📞 If you spot a bat, contact your local animal control for guidance.

🐾 Puppy Basics: Setting Your New Best Friend Up for Success! 🐶

Bringing home a puppy is an exciting adventure — but those first few months are also a very important time for building a healthy, happy, and confident companion!
Over the last few posts, we’ve covered some of the biggest topics every puppy parent should know about:

💉 Vaccines: Keeping your puppy protected from preventable diseases is one of the most important steps you can take. Staying on schedule with puppy vaccines helps give them the best start in life.

✂️ Spay & Neuter: Understanding the appropriate timing for spaying or neutering your puppy is an important conversation to have with your veterinarian. Every puppy is an individual, and recommendations can vary based on breed, size, lifestyle, and health.

🐕 Socialization: Socialization is about much more than meeting other dogs! It’s about helping your puppy safely experience new people, places, sounds, surfaces, and situations so they can grow into confident adults.

🚽 Potty Training: Consistency, routine, and learning your puppy’s signals are key. Watching for those little signs that they need to go can help prevent accidents and make potty training a smoother process.

Puppyhood goes by quickly, and the habits you build now can help shape the relationship you’ll have for years to come. ❤️

🐶 When Should You Spay or Neuter Your Puppy? 🐾

One of the most common questions we hear is: “What is the right age to spay or neuter my puppy?”

The answer is: it depends on your puppy! 🐕

Factors such as breed, size, s*x, growth rate, and overall health can all influence the ideal timing. In general:
• Many small- to medium-sized dogs may be spayed or neutered around 6 months of age.
• Larger and giant breed dogs may benefit from waiting until they are closer to skeletal maturity, which can be 12–24 months, depending on the breed.
• Female puppies may have additional considerations regarding their first heat cycle, while male puppies may have different recommendations based on breed and behavior.

Because every puppy is unique, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Your veterinarian can help determine the best timing based on the latest research and your puppy’s individual needs.

🐾 The goal is to support healthy growth and development while also providing the long-term health benefits of spaying and neutering.

📞 If you’re unsure what’s right for your puppy, schedule a conversation with your veterinary team—we’re happy to help create a plan tailored just for them! 💙
