🐾 Canine Parvovirus: What Every Dog Owner Should Know 🐾

Canine parvovirus (often called “parvo”) is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening virus that affects dogs, especially puppies and unvaccinated dogs. It spreads easily through contact with infected f***s, contaminated surfaces, and even shoes or clothing.

Once infected, parvo attacks the gastrointestinal tract and can also impact the immune system.

Common signs include:

⚠️ Severe vomiting
⚠️ Profuse, often bloody diarrhea
⚠️ Loss of appetite
⚠️ Extreme lethargy
⚠️ Dehydration
⚠️ Fever or low body temperature

Because the virus damages the intestinal lining, dogs can become dangerously dehydrated very quickly, and secondary infections can develop as the immune system weakens. Without treatment, parvo can be fatal.

The good news: canine parvovirus is preventable with routine core vaccinations. 💉 Early vaccination and boosters are one of the most effective ways to protect your dog, especially during puppyhood.

If you think your dog may be showing symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately — early treatment can save lives. ❤️🐾

🐾 Understanding Distemper (DAPP) in Dogs 🐾

Canine distemper is a serious, highly contagious viral disease that can affect a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. It spreads through airborne exposure (coughing/sneezing) or contact with infected animals.

Once a dog is infected, distemper can cause a wide range of symptoms, including:

⚠️ Early signs:
Fever
Eye and nasal discharge
Coughing
Lethargy
Loss of appetite

⚠️ As the disease progresses, it can lead to:

Vomiting and diarrhea
Thickened paw pads (“hard pad disease”)
Muscle twitching
Seizures
Neurologic damage

Unfortunately, distemper can be life-threatening, especially in puppies and unvaccinated dogs. Even dogs who survive may be left with long-term neurological issues.

The good news: distemper is preventable with routine core vaccinations, which are a key part of keeping your dog protected throughout their life. 💉❤️

If you’re unsure whether your pet is up to date on their vaccines, our team is happy to help check and keep them protected.

Happy Friday! 🎉

Today’s highly competitive event: The Great Fruit Roll-Up Race of 2026. 🏁🍓

Dr. Logan, Dr. Green and Kaitlin, our LVT, put their speed, determination, and questionable chewing techniques to the test to see who could finish a Fruit Roll-Up the fastest.
The competition was fierce and we may have discovered a few hidden professional eaters among us, all while holding back the laughter!😂

Thank you Kaitlin for the fun suggestion that brought some extra smiles to our day! ❤️

And a special welcome back to Dr. Logan on her first week back at work after maternity leave. We are so happy to have you back!! 🐾

We hope everyone has a fantastic Friday and a wonderful weekend ahead!

🐾 What is the Bordetella Vaccine? 🐾

The Bordetella vaccine helps protect dogs against “kennel cough,” a highly contagious respiratory infection that spreads anywhere dogs gather, including:

🐶 Boarding facilities
🐶 Groomers
🐶 Dog parks
🐶 Daycare
🐶 Training classes
Symptoms of kennel cough can include:
⚠️ Persistent coughing
⚠️ Sneezing
⚠️ Nasal discharge
⚠️ Lethargy

While many dogs recover well, puppies, senior dogs, and immunocompromised pets can become more seriously ill.
Bordetella bronchiseptica, affects a dog’s respiratory system and causes irritation and inflammation in the airways.

💉 The Bordetella vaccine is commonly required for boarding and grooming facilities and is an important part of preventative care for social dogs.
Even indoor pets can still be exposed through walks, vet visits, or contact with other dogs.

Not sure if your dog is due for their Bordetella vaccine? Give our hospital a call — we’re happy to help keep your pet protected! ❤️🐾

💉🐾 June is Vaccine Awareness Month at Our Hospital! 🐾💉

This month, our hospital is focusing on the importance of keeping pets protected through routine vaccinations and preventative care.

Vaccines help protect dogs and cats against serious — and sometimes life-threatening — diseases such as:

🐶 Parvovirus
🐶 Distemper
🐶 Bordetella
🐶 Leptospirosis
🐱 FVRCP illnesses

🐶🐱 Rabies

Throughout June, we’ll be sharing educational posts about common pet vaccines, what they protect against, and why staying up to date is so important for your pet’s health and safety. ❤️

Whether your pet is a playful puppy, curious kitten, senior companion, or social adventurer, vaccines are one of the best ways to help them live a longer, healthier life.

Have questions about your pet’s vaccine schedule? Our team is always happy to help!
