As we observe Memorial Day, we pause not only to honor the men and women who served our country, but also the remarkable individuals whose service extended to both soldiers and animals on the front lines.

This Memorial Day, we’re honored to share a tribute originally posted by the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association in recognition of Lt. Colonel Dr. Louis A. Merillat (1868–1956)—a pioneering veterinarian, educator, and leader in both military and veterinary history.

Dr. Merillat served as Chief Veterinarian of the U.S. First Army during World War I, where he played a critical role in the care and treatment of military animals. His contributions not only supported the health and readiness of American forces, but also helped advance veterinary medicine in profound and lasting ways.

His leadership extended well beyond his military service—through teaching, publishing, and serving as president of several veterinary associations, Dr. Merillat helped shape the profession we’re proud to be part of today.

At Scottsdale Animal Clinic, we’re grateful to stand on the foundation built by individuals like Dr. Merillat. This Memorial Day, we honor his service—and the service of all who have made lasting contributions through compassion, dedication, and care.
