We haven't done a newsletters in a while but we would like to change that and start sharing information on topics that we feel are important for your pets health more frequently. Our first topic is diet!
Could Your Pet's Diet Be a Death Sentence?
What is the leading cause of death in our pets today?
The leading cause of death in our pets today, shockingly, is cancer…52%!! In people, the rate is one in three. How could this be? There seems to be multiple causes. Let's discuss 4 of them.
Cause #1 Sugar and high carbohydrate diets such as dry food kibble.
To manufacture kibble diets, they have to be high in carbohydrates. (35-50%) High carbohydrate diets are easier to dry and the ingredients are cheap, compared to protein and fat. Cancer loves sugar.
Cause #2 The way our foods are prepared
For long shelf life, moisture has to be removed. Traditionally, heating to 300 degrees for 3 hours is average. This then requires synthetic vitamins to be added afterwards. This is not natural. The wave of the future is freeze drying the food. This preserves the natural vitamins and protein. Fat is not harmed. To enhance dry food flavor, add coconut oil, butter or meat juice.
Cause #3 Traditional dog and car treats
Let's propose that treats should be healthy. The majority of the treats are high carb and are loaded with coloring and preservatives. The video “9 Dog Treats to Avoid and 2 That are Worth It” on You Tube discusses their manufacturing. A better choice would be collagen chews, cartilage from meat, bones or crunchy vegetables. Keep fruit to a minimum.
Cause #4 Low Fat Diets
For the past 40 years we have all been told to avoid fat and red meat. The assumption was that this causes Heart Disease. People have done low fat, but Heart Disease has not lowered. This strategy was extrapolated to pet food! Also dry foods keep fat to a minimum to have a longer shelf life. Fat is a necessary requirement for good health. Body hormones are produced from fatty acids. The brain is half fat. Butter, coconut oil, and egg yolks are healthy. No seed oils, they are not natural and are poisonous. Cheese, milk or goat milk for Cats.
