What to expect when owning or fostering a
PUPPY MILL SURVIVOR

So you are thinking about fostering or adopting a puppy mill survivor?

What’s a puppy mill? A puppy mill or puppy farm are simply put- large scale breeding operations. Dogs are kept for breeding purposes only. They are housed in wire cages in inhumane living conditions that impact the dog’s physical and mental well being for life.

What is a puppy mill survivor? A puppy mill survivor is a dog kept with many other dogs, for the sole purpose of breeding dogs for profit. Miller’s goal is to make as much profit with very little regard to a dog’s well being and health.

The result of living in PM isolation and unsanitary conditions are typically medical ailments, under socialization, and many behavioral issues.
Educate yourself before you decide to foster or to own a puppy mill survivor. With education and tools you will be better equipped to handle issues if they are present.
🐾The cost of getting a PM survivor physically healthy. Many survivors have chronic or congenital diseases, which can lead to hefty vet bills. Eye conditions, skin diseases, heart problems are just to name a few.
🐾PM Survivors are flight risks. You must have good fitting collars or harnesses in case they get scared. Escape proof fences are also a good way to keep your mind at peace.
🐾 PM survivors receive very little to zero socialization, exercise or enrichment throughout their reproductive years. This leads to extremely high rates of fears/phobias, compulsive/repetitive behaviors, sensitivity issues on being touched, and problematic behaviors coping with everyday normal living. In addition, stress and panic can result over everyday household appliances like the sound of a toilet flushing, ringing of a phone or washing machine noises. Calming agents can sometimes be helpful while you desensitizing and counter conditioning your PM survivor to novel stimuli.
🐾House training issues are common ground for dogs raised in cages. Whenever they must defecate or urinate, they just go. We house train our dogs by teaching them to hold it because dogs instinctively will not go to the bathroom where they sleep or eat. This is not the case for PM survivors, so house training doesn’t come without challenges. Marking can also be an issue for male PM survivors, success can be reached with the aid of potty bands. With patience and persistence, you can successfully potty train them.

Puppy mill survivors need a boat load of patience, love, time and understanding to overcome the damage done by life in a mill. Having realistic expectations is very important. Some may overcome issues in time but some may not and the process is slow. So be prepared to celebrate baby steps and know your journey can be a very rewarding experience.
