Leaf-tailed geckos (genus Uroplatus) are one of my favorites to work with, but are a little trickier than your average pet gecko. Working to raise my own food supply for them has not only been rewarding but has shown to improve their long term health. Do you raise your own feeder invertebrates, and if so what kinds do you have?

Reproductive disease is unfortunately a common issue in female bearded dragons. We will often see follicular stasis (as seen here) or dystopia (often referred to as egg binding). Sometimes supportive care is all these animals need, but we were not so fortunate in this case. We can also see this reproductive issue in multiple species of reptiles ranging from other lizards, turtles and tortoises, and less commonly snakes.

Finally got my first eggs from my giant leaf-tailed geckos (Uroplatus fimbriatus), also known as common flat-tail geckos. This species is endemic to Madagascar and is the largest leaf-tail species I work with. I've raised both these geckos, Daffodil and Dandelion, from babies and this is the first year they've been ready to breed. These eggs look good and can't wait to see little ones hatch out!

There are inherent problems in keeping macaws as companion animals, not the least of which is their sheer size. These big birds are simply too large for the average human home, and because of this, macaws are highly prone to being poorly kept in cages that are too small to accommodate their physical or psychological needs. Truly, No Cage is Big Enough for these large birds.

Like most parrots, they are intelligent individuals who tend to enjoy testing the boundaries. They usually bond strongly to one chosen human and can become aggressively protective of that person, to the detriment of other family members. Tendencies toward aggression often result in overuse of the cage as a means of control, which leads to frustration, increased aggression, high incidents of self-plucking, and deafening protests that are intolerable to humans.

It's been a while since I did an update on my alligator snapping turtle Charlie. This is his first upgrade, but certainly not his last. Alligator snapping turtles are the largest turtle species in North America reaching average sizes around 60lbs (27kg) but can get up to 150lbs (68kg). Charlie will ultimately need an enclosure 1000+ gallons (3750+ L) as he grows, but thankfully this new upgrade should last him a while.

Lighting and UVB is a controversial topic in reptile/amphibian keeping. While many argue some species don't need UV lighting at all, there is a constantly growing pool of evidence showing that regular exposure shows at the very least positive behavioral changes, along with some noticeable health and reproductive improvements. While we are still figuring out the correct levels of exposure and needs for species to thrive, best practice in my opinion is to offer UV lighting as a component of your husbandry for all reptile and amphibians. Do all of your reptile/amphibians get UVB?

Shoutout to the surgery team at Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital in Akron, OH for taking care of Peaches this week! Little miss has been limping and wasn't getting better with meds and cage rest, so she ended up getting a CT scan that indicated signs of issues with her elbow. She underwent arthroscopy in her right elbow that found a fragmented medial coronoid process of the ulna. This is a common cause of lameness in younger large breed dogs. Hopefully this procedure will help Peaches feel better and get back to some more normal activity in a couple months, as well as minimize the progression of arthritis going forward. In the meantime she got some new toys to keep her busy during recovery.

Some days at work are tough. And some days you come in to your desk chair being decked out courtesy of your incredible support staff. The "crocs" desk chair is now covered in some pins my team seems to think help define me (and them as well really). Goes to show having an awesome support staff make a world of difference in a clinic. Not pictured is the frog in pink go-go boots for the love of Chappell Roan.
